PSYCHIATRIC NURSE PRACTITIONER – COMMUNITY-BASED Nurse Practitioner, M.S. AMB at Brookside Community Health located in the heart of Jamaica Plain Boston.
Brookside is a licensed Health Center of Brigham and Women's Hospital and provides multi-disciplinary, comprehensive care with services in a range of medical areas including: Adult, Family and Pediatric Primary Care, OB/GYN, Dental/Oral Surgery, Nutrition/WIC, and Behavioral Health. Each year, more than 11,000 patients from Jamaica Plain and the city of Boston use these services, producing more than 69,000 visits to Brookside each year. The health center's services are provided primarily by a bilingual English/Spanish medical and professional staff. Brookside is a teaching site for Harvard Medical School, Mass General Institute of Nursing, Harvard Dental School, Boston University Dental School, as well as Boston College and Simmons Schools of Social Work.
- Our Psychiatric NP would be embedded in our Behavioral Health Department and work closely with our medical department to serve the mental health needs of our patient population.
- The NP would work collaboratively with our Social Workers, Licensed Mental Health Clinician, PhD Psychologist. Adult Psychiatrists and Community Resource Specialists.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities
- Patient Care Organization
- Provides direct care, assessment/diagnoses, medication management, counseling, and teaching to a select patient population.
- Arranges for appropriate plan of care and follow-up based on outcome of diagnostic, lab, and assessment findings.
- Performs laboratory tests appropriate for specific patient population.
- Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
- Records pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
- Sets priorities for appropriate and efficient management of patient care that reflects cost effective management of time, available human resources, supplies and equipment
- Maintains interdisciplinary approach to planning and communicating patient care information by discussing patient data with appropriate physicians and other health care professionals.
- Demonstrates awareness of community resources and assists staff, patients, and families to effectively utilize them.
- Quality of Care
- Assists in the development, implementation and revision of nurse practitioner guidelines and monitoring requirements for prescription writing in collaboration with their designated physician and Nurse Director.
- Evaluates outcomes of own patients’ care and makes necessary revisions in care plans.
- Seeks and provides consultative services as required.
- Participates in departmental and organization quality improvement program.
- Utilizes quality improvement data and research findings to enhance patient care.
- Coordination
- Demonstrates appropriate collaborative and consultative relationships with other providers within the institution and community.
- Serves on Nursing and Hospital Committees, as appropriate, and assumes responsibility for disseminating and communicating information to staff.
- Budget
- Participates in setting productivity metrics and in cost effective management of personnel, time, supplies, and equipment in his/her area.
- Works with Practice Manager to effectively meet productivity standards
- Personnel Management
- Participates in selection process of new employees in group or team practice as requested.
- Provides input into evaluation of other staff as appropriate.
- Education
- Acts as preceptor for nursing students if applicable.
- Participates in orientation of new staff.
- Participates in departmental and organization continuing education programs.
- Identifies own learning needs and updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of current literature.
- Participates in educating department and site-specific staff.
- Planning
- Develops annual objectives and reviews with Practice Manager and Nurse Director and collaborating M.D. at time of performance review and at appropriate intervals. Completes annual credentialing process through the Nursing Department credentialing program.
- Assists in determining, evaluating, and/or implementing clinical area goals and objectives.
- Maintains interdisciplinary approach for planning and communicating information for patient care and operation of practice.
- Maintains current knowledge of legislation that may affect the health care delivery system.
- Research
- Participates in nursing research at a level consistent with educational background and experience.
- Maintains understanding of current research of others in related clinical areas through review of relevant publications.
- Participates in grant writing as appropriate.
Education
- Master’s in Nursing (MSN), (or) DNP (or) PhD, in Psychiatric-Mental Health required. Completion of a Master’s or post Masters’ degree accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).
- Require PMHNP (Psychiatry Mental Health NP) certification.
- Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
- Certification by a nationally-recognized accrediting body approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
- Require active DEA license and a Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration number.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of current psychiatry nursing experience as a Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner required.
- Prefer Psych nursing experience in a community setting and/or working with a diverse patient population.
- Current experience with general psychiatry ambulatory patient population as ILP, preferred.
- Spanish language skills strongly preferred.
- Experience working in a large complex health care organization preferred.
- Experience leading a patient population care delivery model using clinical guidelines and protocols preferred.
- Ability to work with a variety of information systems and databases: MS Word, PowerPoint, Access.
