Job Summary:
The Arizona Department of Veterans' Services team in Flagstaff is looking for talented Registered Nurse Supervisors committed to excellence in care. Enjoy working in our brand new state-of-the art facility!
The Registered Nurse Supervisor provides supervisory and clinical nursing oversight to include overall direction of nursing operations during an assigned shift of duty. The Nursing Supervisor responds to and takes appropriate action in emergency situations and is responsible for supervising nursing staff assigned to the shift including orientation, training, performance appraisals and discipline as needed. The employee in this position will learn, implement and monitor Arizona Management System (AMS) methods and will use AMS concepts and tools for problem solving and continuous work/process improvements and efficiencies. The Nursing Supervisor incorporates a cultural focus on Veteran/Member centered care in the performance of job duties.
Job Duties:
As a Registered Nurse Supervisor you will:
- Supervise nursing staff
- Complete performance appraisals
- Counsel staff
- Recommend discipline as needed
- Oversee and assist with admissions to and discharges from the facility
- Make rounds of Veteran/Member areas to ensure proper level and quality of care.
- Follow up on all Veteran/Member issues
- Provide direct care
- Perform difficult nursing procedures
- Provide support and consultation to the nursing staff on clinical issues
- Oversee daily staff assignments to ensure that the facility is appropriately staffed to meet the Veteran/Member needs in the most efficient and effective manner
- Participate in the selection of nursing staff
- Assist with the planning and delivery of in-service training for assigned shift
- Assist with quality assurance audits
- Contact the Director of Nursing Services and/or Administrator with significant issues (e.g., abuse, neglect, misappropriation of property or funds, fire or police involvement, elopements, etc.) in accordance with facility policies and regulations
- Obtain, assign and maintain inventory of supplies, equipment and medications during the hours that the warehouse is closed
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices and techniques of professional licensed nursing care as applied to a skilled nursing environment
- Gerontological/Geriatric nursing theory and practices
- Community and medical resources necessary to provide quality care
- Practices and procedures for developing treatment plans for resident/patient care
- Practices and procedures of pharmacology and medicines
- Federal, State, VA, and agency laws, rules and regulations governing the practice of nursing within a skilled nursing facility, general professional nursing practices and the security and control of medical supplies and medications and dispensing thereof
Skill in:
- Observing and assessing behavior and progress of patients
- Problem-solving
- Applying and interpreting state and agency laws and regulations governing geriatric nursing practices
- Verbal and written communication
- Supervision and leadership
The ability to:
- Abide by nursing regulations
- Evaluate, analyze, make independent decisions and follow up regarding client health problems
- Work with professional and non-professional staff to ensure health and safety of residents
Selective Preference(s):
- Experience in a Skilled/Long-Term Care facility
- Supervisory/management experience
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Current Negative TB skin test (Mantoux skin test) within the last twelve months or a written statement from a physician, physician’s assistant or a registered nurse practitioner indicating freedom from Tuberculosis, if in the past has had a positive skin test or Tuberculosis
- Must be able to obtain and retain a fingerprint clearance card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety
- Current or temporary license to practice as a RN nurse in the State of Arizona
- Current CPR card that was obtained by physical assessment
- Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on State business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see A.AC. R2-10-207.11).

Retirement:
