POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, coordinates and supervises personnel
providing care to the patients and all components of the treatment program.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Organizes, directs and controls staffing schedules, daily assignments, acuity reports and safe and efficient use of resources. Assigns duties based on staff competency and patient acuity. Allocates resources and monitors expenses. Participates in budget development under the direction and guidance of hospital administration.
- Provides direct nursing care in conformance with accepted standards of nursing care practice. Provides guidance, training and monitoring of Master Treatment Plan development and updates.
- Uses clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Completes routine and unexpected job assignments within agreed upon timeframe. Provides intercommunication between unit, department and hospital staff.
- Assists in the evaluation, monitoring and development of quality patient care activity schedules. Encourages family involvement. Attends Program Evaluation Meeting. Attends and participates in Nursing Leadership, Performance Improvement and other hospital meetings/committees as needed. Coordinates delivery of care with hospital departments. Actively participates in on-going development of quality treatment.
- Participates in developing and maintaining unit, departmental and hospital standards of excellence through problem solving, use of employee evaluations, disciplinary action, committee involvement and self-directed growth and development. Participates in hospital Service Excellence Program.
- Reviews and/or completes incident reports, Infection Control Reports, Patient Advocate Reports, Sentinel Events and employees’ Performance Appraisals to assess quality. Maintains patient rights and hospital policies. Review charts to ensure appropriate patient/family forms are signed. Provides and supports educational offerings. Plans thorough, organized orientations. Ensures staff have necessary resources to provide quality care. Participates in policy and procedure development and review.
- Works with A&R staff to assure timely admission process.
- Effectively assumes responsibility of DON in his/her absence. Willingly accepts additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Nursing.
- Will adhere to all safety policies and safe work practice.
- Will attend hospital safety trainings.
- Will adhere to all hospital policies and procedures.
- Annually review safety policies for your department to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and hospital practice.
- Annually review the number of injuries, types and costs for your department as well as provide effective corrective action which results in reduction of accidents.
- Annually set safety goals for your department and review every 6 months for compliance.
- Annually review and maintain updated job descriptions, performance evaluations, orientation checklists and competencies.
- Report all accidents immediately and provide effective timely corrective action on all accidents.
- Ensure departmental safe work practice.

Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Must be a Registered Nurse
licensed to practice in this state. BSN preferred.
Training and Experience: Five years RN experience, two of which have been in
psychiatric nursing and one year of which has been nursing management. One year specialty
experience/training working with patient population of the unit managed. Certain nursing
and/or life experiences may serve as meeting experience requirements.
Knowledge Required: Knowledge of normal growth and development appropriate to the
patient population of the unit managed. Demonstrates effective written and verbal
communication skills with demonstrated interpersonal and problem solving expertise.
Possesses strong organizational skills and ability to delegate appropriately. Possesses
knowledge of Nursing Standards of Care and Practice and ability to integrate these in all
aspects of nursing management. Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to manage program
financial needs. Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations as apply to areas of
responsibility.
