Job Description Summary:
Plan, direct, and evaluate the overall nursing care and functions. Coordinate the activities of the unit and direct, organize, and assign work to the nurses and pharmacy technicians. Assess, monitor, and educate the nursing staff on patient care. Institute emergency procedures as necessary.
Key Performance Area:
Work in cooperation with all office departments to ensure continuity of patient care and smooth office flow.
Staffing: Prepare schedule for clinic’s Nurses and Pharmacy Technician. Work in cooperation with Head Nurse to assure coverage for I creased patient schedules or staff’s time off. Provide Head Nurse with all nursing/ pharmacy technicians requests for time off (verbal communication of pending requested days off; all staff must complete requests in Ultipro).
Training: Oversee the orientation of new nurses and pharmacy technicians. Will assess skills of these employees and make a recommendation to the Head Nurse for continued employment, further training, or release. Will ensure employees have appropriate training and other resources to perform their job.
Forms: Responsible for the completion of incident reports, reaction forms and drug waste forms that need to be completed and turned in to Head Nurse on the day of any event.
Patient Education: Coordinate nurses to teach patient education classes. Oversee packet assembly for orientation and patient education classes.
Communication: The Lead Nurse will check their AON e-mail and Onco EMR mailboxes daily and clean them out by reading all messages and respond accordingly. Coordinate the triage of incoming phone calls. Act as a resource for staff regarding AON policies and procedures. After discussing and reviewing all clinical policy, procedure and regulatory changes, the Lead Nurse will be responsible for communication made to the nursing and pharmacy staff.
Research: Understand and support clinical trials and ECOG. Will communicate with Research Coordinator to ensure that excellent patient care is achieved at all times.
Special chemotherapy circumstances: The Lead RN will coordinate special procedure and special chemotherapy treatments. Will ensure that medications and/or special equipment are in-house at time of patient’s appointment.
Pharmacy: Work with purchasing department to ensure PAR levels are maintained to assure sufficient stock and to minimize waste. Have thorough knowledge of Nucleus medication dispensing system. Oversee ordering of medical and pharmaceutical supplies. Ensure the timely rotation of medication and stock.
Comply with all Federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to patient care, patients’ rights, safety, billing, human resources and collections. Adhere to all AON and departmental policies and procedures, including IT policies and procedures and Disaster Recovery Plan. Maintain and ensure the confidentiality of all patient and employee information at all times.
Adheres to all company and departmental policies and procedures.
Keeps work area and records in a neat and orderly manner.
Maintains all company equipment is a safe and working order.
Will be expected to work at any AON location to help meet AON business needs.
Supervisory Duties:
Provide daily direction and communication to employees so that departmental work is performed in a timely, efficient, and knowledgeable manner. Create and maintain high quality work environment so team members are motivated to perform at their highest level.
Provide continual evaluation of processes and procedures. Discuss all suggested methods to improve area operations, efficiency, and service to both internal and external customers.
Establish work procedures and processes that support company and departmental standards, procedures, and strategic directives. After reviewing with and in coordination with the Head Nurse, provide performance feedback and coaching on a regular basis with each nurse/pharmacy technician.
Maintain a favorable working relationship with all other company employees to foster and promote a cooperative and harmonious working climate that will be conducive to maximum employee morale, productivity, and efficiency/effectiveness.
Be available for employees that experience work problems. Discuss all issues with the Head Nurse, and together provide appropriate coaching, counseling, direction, and resolution.
Keep Head Nurse promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance. Together take prompt corrective action where necessary and or suggest alternative courses of action that may be taken.
Lead RN may be asked to sit in on interview with job applicants and give perspective of potential hire that are related to positions in assigned work area.
Coordinate with the Head Nurse on nurse/pharmacy technician requests of time off, while ensuring adequate staff to maintain work productivity.
Position Qualifications/Requirements:
Registered Nurse, appropriate state license;
certification of OCN required within two years of employment.
At least two years of experience with hematology/oncology patients in a clinic or hospital is required.
Position also requires fluency in the English language well as excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and leadership skills.
Current CPR certification required. Valid driver’s license in the resident state to travel to clinics.
