Under direction of a Clinical Coordinator and in collaboration with other members of the Palliative Care Team (physician, psychologist, chaplain, trainees), provides direct or indirect nursing care to hospital patients in receiving palliative care support; to be scheduled as needed, and to perform related work as required. The Per Diem Registered Nurse III, in partnership with other palliative care team members, will provide holistic compassionate care within the palliative care (PC) team structure that embraces the patient and family as a unit and recognizes cultural, ethnic and spiritual differences. The Palliative Care team’s aim is to relieve suffering and improve quality of life during any state in the course of a life-threatening illness, from diagnosis through the end of life and bereavement.

The ideal candidate will possess a unique blend of clinical expertise, emotional intelligence, and strong communication skills to provide exceptional care to patients with serious illnesses. This role requires a professional who is not only adept at managing complex symptoms but also committed to supporting patients and their families through challenging times with empathy and respect. The ideal candidate will emphasize holistic, compassionate, whole-person care within the palliative care team structure.

What We Offer:

Educational Incentive: Incumbents may be eligible for educational incentive pay in addition to the adjusted base rate of pay in the noted amounts for educational attainments which are not specifically required for the classifications:

Bachelor's Degree $1.25/hour
Graduate Degree $1.75/hour

Bilingual Incentive: Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination.
Weekend Shift Differential: $2.00 per hour.

Payroll Title: Per Diem Registered Nurse III

Per Diem Registered Nurse III is represented by the California Nurse's Association (CNA) and is eligible for overtime compensation. Salary placement will be determined according to the current CNA Per Diem Unit memorandum of agreement.

This is an Intermittent position. An Intermittent Employee is a person employed for intermittent/temporary work on a day-to-day basis. This Intermittent position may be assigned weekends and some shifts during the week.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Per Diem and Intermittent vacancies within Palliative Care. There is currently one (1) Intermittent vacancy at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC).

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

OPENING DATE: July 31, 2024

CLOSING DATE: Continuous and may close at any time; therefore, the schedule for the remainder of the process will depend upon when we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications to meet business needs. Utilizes nursing process, plans and participates in providing daily patient care;
Follows prescribed doctors' orders concerning treatments and medications;
Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to provide holistic care for patient population;
Makes patient observations, records and reports all pertinent information;
Provides follow-through on judgement within the scope of accepted nursing practice;
Assists doctors in examination and treatment;
Participates in family meetings to provide continuity and support;
Provides unit organization and is responsible for completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift;
Assists in training, supervision and evaluation of ancillary personnel and in the training of new personnel;
Conducts data gathering and analysis; and
Performs other related duties as required.

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

Education, Training, and Experience:

Per Diem Registered Nurse III - requires at least five (5) years of nursing experience.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
Must possess and maintain a current valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California, or licensure in another state with California licensure pending
Must obtain certification for Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) within one (1) year of hire
Must possess a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment
Excellent written communication skills must be demonstrated in the completion of the employment application and supplemental questionnaire

Desired:

Current certification as a Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN)
Experience working in palliative care
Bilingual (English/Spanish) communication skills

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Working knowledge of:the theory, techniques, and practices of professional nursing as it relates to palliative care
Working knowledge of medical terminology and hospital routine and equipment
Working knowledge of medicines and narcotics
Working ability to:plan and organize nursing care
train and supervise non-professional staff
establish and maintain confidence of patients and staff
Work effectively in different hospital departments on shifts as required
