Job Summary

Position responsible for developing, providing, and coordinating direct staff education, indirect patient education, orientation training, and development of curriculum and individual learning plans and monitoring staff.

Job Description

What are the pre-qualifications needed for this role in experience?Must have experience in critical care for at least 5 years as a nurse. This position will oversee education for ICU, IMU and Cardiac Neuro Unit. We do prefer someone with prior educator experience. Prioritize internal candidates with education experience first, then external.

What certifications or degrees are a must and nice to have?MSN or specialty certification required. Willing to enroll in a Masters program within 6-8 months of hire if don’t already have masters. Master’s in Education preferred

What does a day in the life look like on your unit?Education at MHHS is now centralized to the system, so this educator will report to the campus centralized education department and will be over unit specific education, campus education needs, as well as some commitment to system initiatives as well. Day to day activities will include unit level in-services, roving education, just in time education for staff, teaching campus classes alongside other educators such as BLS, ACLS, port-a-cath, EKG, hospital skills week etc. System level classes include a few new grad nurse residency classes/year at the Westside campus. Educator will also sit on critical care council for system and participate in other meetings at campus level as appropriate.

What is schedule for this role?Mon-Fri on site 8 hour shifts. (Days) Hours vary depending on needs. Typical start time is anywhere between 7-8 am and end time 3-4 pm. Must be flexible for some evenings to meet staff and support hospital skills week

How do you rotate holidays and weekends?Weekends and holidays off. We rotate holiday week vacation requests

Interview Process: Same day interview and panel. Will require a 5-minute presentation on a healthcare topic related to an education initiative that candidate has created or worked on.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree and/or Specialty Certification Required

Licenses/Certifications:

Current State of Texas license/permit to practice professional nursing
Completion of Basic Life Support
Other certification based upon specific nursing unit requirements

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

At least five (5) years of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse
Viewed as a “leader” in current specialty
Education experience preferred

Principal Accountabilities

Serves as an educational resource at the service level and for core hospital activities. Assesses, plans, develops, coordinates, implements and evaluates educational needs that are appropriate to target population.
Develops curriculum for identified learning needs. Facilitates and coordinates individual learning plans.
Promotes team approach to healthcare delivery. Facilitates effective patient education at the service level. Evaluates effectiveness of patient education.
Develops and maintains new employee orientation program. Acts as clinical resource for staff. Communicates effectively with all levels of the healthcare team.
Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
Other duties as assigned.
