The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Columbia University's Department of Anesthesiology is seeking a Pediatric Pain Nurse Practitioner (PPNP). The PPNP will provide direct care to a diverse pediatric patient population in a tertiary pediatric hospital.

Responsibilities

Perform inpatient consultation for pediatric pain patients. Collaborate with pediatric pain providers.
Perform assessment of patients by taking problem-oriented histories as they relate to issues of pain and perform physical examinations, incorporating all relevant clinical data including laboratory and diagnostic data.
Develop, in collaboration with pediatric pain providers, a problem-oriented plan for diagnostic, therapeutic and medication modalities relevant to pediatric pain patients followed by the pain service and document the management plan in the medical record.
Perform daily rounds and follow-up on pediatric pain patients.
Perform pain management consultations
Documentation of daily notes on pain patients and placement of relevant orders.
Prescribe medications, including controlled substances, devices and other medications within NYS and Federal scope of practice law for nurse practitioners.
Perform and/or assist with approved procedures, including but not limited to, assist anesthesiologists with insertion of epidural and peripheral nerve catheters and blocks; management of fascial plane catheters, epidurals, peripheral nerve catheters, and TENS units; removal and dressing changes for epidural catheters; intravenous bolusing of analgesic via patient controlled analgesia; initiate recommendations for referrals to other health care providers and/or consulting physicians for further definitive therapy.
Conduct appropriate follow-up of patients as needed.
Provide education to pediatric pain patients and their families regarding pain treatment.
Participate in team and family meetings.
Participate in staff education regarding all aspects of pediatric pain management for nursing staff.
Assist pediatric pain providers in education and training of house staff.
Perform assessment and risk stratification of pediatric pain management for nursing staff.
Review available medical records and request additional clinical information including medical record, consultation notes, laboratory data, as needed.
Contact primary surgical/medical service to make appropriate planning and preparation for intra-operative analgesia care and post-operative care.
Participate in monthly divisional M&M presentation.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have an MS in Nursing with a national board certification as a pediatric or family nurse practitioner.
ACLS, PALS, and BLS certification
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, strong analytical abilities and problem-solving skills.
Must have a NYS Pediatric or Family Nurse Practitioner license and DEA
Must have at least 3 years of experience as an RN or NP
Experience with pediatric patients is required
