Job Description Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Director, Clinical Manager and Charge Nurse. Responsible for providing direct patient care and assigned procedures for all ED patients based on age specific needs. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs direct and indirect patient care responsibilities as assigned by the charge nurse and/or preceptor.
- Ensures patient safety.
- Documents delivery of patient care and other pertinent information in patients’ medical record and updates plan of care for assigned patients as necessary.
- Performs responsibilities as related to the safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
- Communicates information regarding patients and unit operations to RN preceptor, charge nurse, clinical manager, director, and other shifts in a timely manner using proper lines of communication.
- Communicates effectively with other departments with personnel from other departments in the hospital using proper lines of communication.
- Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
- Transports patients within the ED, to nursing units and ancillary departments within the hospital after identifying each patient by verifying armband information and noting on transport log
- Ensures and maintains patient safety during each transport by maintaining stretcher rails In up/locked position and maintaining wheelchair safety.
- Transports IV pumps, 02 , patient belongings and indwelling catheters according to department requirements.
- Assist licensed personnel as indicated with the transport of patients with IV medications, blood, chest tubes, ventilators, Bipap.
- Maintains competency in placement of OCL splints by initial training and yearly review.
- Cleans patient rooms, stretchers and equipment after returning from transport and prn.
- Transports patients requiring cardiac monitoring on appropriately assigned equipment.
- Performs 12 lead EKG and demonstrates competency in chest/limb lead placement.
- Functions within designated role on trauma team and maintains yearly competency.
- Performs post mortem care and adheres to medical examiner criteria for evidence collection.
- Obtains and documents vital signs/pain scale using age/size appropriate equipment.
- Maintains patient safety by communication with physician or primary nurse.
- Attends ED PCT required in-services as directed.
- Performs assigned patient care procedures under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
- Ensures patients are appropriately gowned for exam or procedure, and on appropriate monitoring devices.
- Collects and transports specimens as directed to the lab.
- Performs venipuncture for the purpose of lab collections and maintains competence.
- Performs responsibilities as related to the safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
- Checks rooms and stocks as needed by designated PAR levels.
- Assures that patient rooms are cleaned and prepared to receive new patients.
- Contributes to a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
- Assist flight crews with transport of patients to ED, cath lab and inpatient treatment areas.
- Assures proper O2 container storage, collection, and replacement.
- Incorporates age specific principles into communication skills and job responsibilities.
- Performs direct and indirect patient care as directed.
- Escorts patients and families from triage area to treatment area maintaining privacy and safety.
- Performs venipuncture for the purpose of lab collections and maintains competence.
- Performs bedside blood glucose testing and maintains annual competence.
- Ensures that all full needle boxes and RCRA boxes are changed.
- Maintains stretcher pressure washing schedule.
- Responds to patient emergencies (CPR) in order to be available to collect specimens as needed.
- Maintains POSITIVE HELPFUL ATTITUDE.
- Uses AIDET at all times.
- Communicates pertinent information to nurse or charge nurse.
- Ensures assigned patients are clean and dry at all times.
- Recognizes the value of continued occupational growth and development.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
- Acceptance into an accredited school of nursing and successful completion of the course requirements needed for the employee to be eligible to graduate within 1 year.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
- BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period and certification must be kept current while in this position.
EXPERIENCE:
- Completion of the first year of an Associate’s Degree program or the junior year of a BSN Degree program from an accredited school of nursing.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and skills as normally acquired through the successful completion of the first year of an Associate’s Degree program or the junior year of a BSN Degree program from an accredited school of nursing.
- Basic computer skills preferred
