JOB SUMMARY
Assist physician with chemotherapy orders. Educates patients and families regarding diagnosis and treatment. Answers questions regarding diagnosis and treatment of the patient. Assists in the coordination of care to other providers in the network. Enters retrospective orders into EMR per protocol for medications, imaging and procedures. Makes telephone calls to patients as needed regarding test results, treatment, etc.
WORK PERFORMED
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Works in conjunction with the Medical Oncologist to provide the highest level of care to the patients.
2. Acts as a scribe for chemotherapy orders and has proficient knowledge of chemotherapy protocols.
3. Communicates with infusion center as necessary per patient’s treatment regimen.
4. Enters retrospective orders into EMR per protocol for medications, imaging and procedures.
5. Provides treatment education to patients and their families.
6. Answers questions regarding diagnosis and treatment.
7. Serves as a consistent contact for the patient/family throughout the process of diagnosis and treatment.
8. Assists in coordination of care to other providers within the network.
9. Makes result telephone calls to patients as needed.
10. Maintains detailed knowledge of computer software systems as it relates to job functions.
11. Prioritize phone calls and coordinate care accordingly.
12. Responds to written and telephone inquiries from patients, insurance carriers and facilities regarding planned services.
13. Takes an active role in facilitation team approach to functions within the department:
-Attends departmental meetings
-Actively participates as a team member in resolution of problems as they are
identified
-Analyzes current procedures, bringing suggestions for improvement to the
attention of team members and supervisor consideration.
14. Proficient in Electronic medical record program used in office.
15. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.
16. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
17. Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
18. Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.

20. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.
21. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
22. Open and close office as required.

1. Assists Medical Assistants and Front Staff as needed.
2. Attends educations training as required.
3. Other duties as assigned.
4. Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Requires sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours at a time). Continually uses fingers for patient care, writing and viewing patient chart in Electronic Medical Record. Routinely uses upper extremities; occasionally lift items up to 25 pounds. Occasionally push cart with supplies up to 30 pounds. Occasionally push wheelchair with patient weighing up to 325 pounds. Stoop, bend and reach above shoulder level regularly. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation and taking blood pressure readings. General vision, near vision and peripheral vision all required.
POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:
Exposure to infectious diseases due to continual patient contact.
Identified Risks:
Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator.

MOST COMPLEX DUTY:
• Ability to maintain a working knowledge of insurance and precertification requirements
• Reviewing a patient’s electronic chart for information that is needed when requesting precertification.
• Ability to communicate effectively with physicians and team members
• Ability to prioritize work in an environment of constant change while meeting the needs of the office.
SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO):
Supervised by the Clinical Coordinator
COMMUNICATIONS:
Must possess the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, physicians and team members. Must be assertive and pleasant in order to gather accurate and complete data. Must be able to convey information to patients in a way that they can understand and also must know when to listen. Must be able to remain calm, tactful and even-tempered in a variety of situations.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must demonstrate a positive attitude. Must be customer service driven, motivated and ambitious. Enjoy working with people and have the ability to collaborate with peers to solve problems. Must be proactive.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: RN with current licensure.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Oncology experience required. Experience in ambulatory oncology nursing helpful. Current CPR required. Oncology Nurse certification must be obtained after the first year of employment.
WORK SCHEDULE: Day, middle or night shift with varying hours based on the needs of the department. Travel to satellite offices may be necessary.
