General Purpose:
To apply the nursing process to deliver basic, safe, therapeutic care for individuals or groups of patients. Incumbents may work in a specialty area such as Adolescents (13-18 years), Adults (19-70 years), or Geriatrics (70+).
Essential Functions:
• Demonstrates the ability to establish an environment of safety for the surgical patient.• Demonstrates the ability to assess, diagnoses, implement, and evaluate treatments and procedures that contribute to the physiological stability of the surgical patient.• Demonstrates knowledge about the psychologic, sociologic and spiritual responses of the patient and their families to the operative or other invasive procedure, including participation of patient in their recovery.• Supports patient’s rights and ethics by delivering consistent, competent and ethical care within legal standards of practice, while maintaining privacy and supporting the patient’s value system.• Demonstrates knowledge of the health system environment and administrative issues that impact job performance, safety and ethical considerations.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Is responsible to the Surgery Manager.• Able to be flexible, training and learn other areas of the Surgical Services area. Participates in performance improvement activities and other duties as assigned on daily, weekly or monthly basis.• Participates on Surgical Team as a member providing direct patient care for all populations, assisting surgeon and anesthesia needs.• Provides direct patient care to adolescent through geriatric patient populations.• Addresses the psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment.• Communicates with Surgeon and Anesthesiologist continuously and as needed about patient condition.• Assists in usage and maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory.• Assesses operating room for equipment functioning and readiness; e.g., obtains supplies for individual cases and ensures all appropriate needs of surgical operating team are met.• Monitors, positions and assists patient during procedure.• Remains patient advocate throughout surgical experience.• Will take call if required.• Knowledge of personal computers, hardware and basic software programs including email, word processing and spreadsheets.• Observes hospital guidelines concerning unscheduled absences and reports unscheduled absences in accordance with hospital procedures.• Observes and respects the confidentiality of information in regard to patients, doctors, and fellow employees as stated in the policy manual.• Demonstrates behaviors consistent with organizational mission and goals.• Participates in quality improvement programs.• Attends staff meetings, educational in-services and reads communication book or minutes.• Adheres to policy and procedures of the departments of the hospital and surgical services department.• Uses hospital nursing practice standards, demonstrates appropriate assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.• Assesses the patient pre-operatively.• Makes accurate and ongoing assessments of patient’s status throughout their care in surgical services.• Demonstrates knowledge and competency in the intra-operative care of patients.• Demonstrates operational knowledge of surgical equipment.• Participates as a preceptor for competency based orientation.• Participates in teams associated with the healthcare delivery in Surgical Services.• Ensures that standards such as National Patient Safety Goals, JC standards and AORN standards of practice are followed and documented appropriately.• Participates as appropriate in community events, educational programs and local, state and national organizations and boards.
Skills & Abilities Required
• Performance based measurement via observation and recorded on orientation record.• Basic computer knowledge and skills• Multitask in an environment that frequently produces a high level of stress and mental fatigue• Organizes on a continuum due to the changing status of the patients and the environment• Pushing, pulling and lifting of patients and/or equipment• Dexterity skills needed for patient treatment• Safely manage exposure to blood and body fluids and other hazardous materials• Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing and/or walking• Mechanical ability to deal with a large number of machines and special equipment• Computer Skills• Refer to policy manual for specific instructions/guidelines. Follow established policies and procedures• Adhere to the standards of the job description and overall philosophy of Boulder City Hospital• Perform activities that demonstrate nursing accountability• To safely and adequately provide and utilize equipment and supplies based on patient’s needs• Evaluate patient outcomes• Participate in the professional development of self and team members• Maintain flexibility to adapt to a variety of workload assignments• Work independently with a minimum of supervision
Education and Experience Required
• Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Nevada• Associate Degree, Bachelors Degree, or Diploma from an accredited program of professional nursing• Current BCLS certification (and re-certify every two years)• Current ACLS (and re-certify every two years)• CNOR preferred, but not necessary• One to three years circulating experience preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly relating to the described functions knowledge, skills and abilities.• Skills to maintain effective communication with patients, families and other members of the health care team.
