Job Summary
Works collaboratively and proactively with other members of the healthcare team to coordinate and facilitate patient care. The job incumbent is a multi-skilled staff member who is able to perform clerical and clinical duties as directed by the provider, leader, and/or RN. The job profile encompasses a multitude of tasks that contribute to the efficient operations of the healthcare practice. Key public relations position which will involve dealing with patient’s complaints and concerns. Medical Assistants may be asked to perform in a dual role to include clinical responsibilities and documentation support for physicians. Responsibilities include the preparation and assembly of medical record applications, organizing healthcare data to provide enhanced patient services, promoting preventative care, and the efficiency of clinical care.
Job Responsibilities
- Focuses communications in patient/customer care, business operations, and/or topics to create a positive work environment.
- Schedules testing for patients (labs, referrals, appointments, etc.), providing appropriate patient education as delegated, ensuring completion of appropriate paperwork including but not limited to waivers, pre-certifications, and referrals as applicable.
- Understands and is able to perform functions related to computer programs, telecommunications equipment and other required technology.
- Maintains neat appearance of work area, patient care area and waiting area conducting light housekeeping as needed.
- Provides superior, individualized customer service for patients, families and other visitors.
- Proactively works to identify and resolve patient concerns and refers to appropriate party if necessary.
- Assists with preparing charts for patient visit.
- Distributes diagnostic reports to appropriate staff members.
- Systematically collects focused data including vital signs, pain rating, pertinent history, and reason for visit, advance directive review, allergies, accurate medication list, and other information as identified by the specialty or patient needs utilizing approved abbreviations.
- Assists provider with exams, minor procedures or treatments obtaining appropriate consent(s) as needed.
- Performs and maintains competency for all point of care clinical testing required for that department including collection and processing of specimens.
- Provides education materials to patient, as directed by the provider or registered nurse.
- Prepares and administers medication as directed by the provider within scope of certification, competency and FHN policies and procedures.
- Displays competency for the Medical Assistant role as evidenced in the annual performance appraisal following the FHN PRIDE Standards, policies and procedures.
- Provides back up support for Patient Service Representative (PSR) according to the PSR job description.
- Provides age/culturally appropriate care as delegated.
- Assists with maintaining just in time inventory of supplies and medications and consults with appropriate staff as needed.
- Utilizes appropriate techniques in cleaning equipment, work area, and exam rooms. Uses proper processes for reporting malfunction of equipment and takes out of service as needed.
- Works with the healthcare team to ensure medical information is present at the time of visit.
- Serves as a patient advocate, proactively working to identify and resolve patient concerns while practicing within FHN policies and procedures.
- Performs any and/or all duties within scope of practice.

Qualifications
Requirements
Education: Medical Assistant Certificate, Diploma or Associate’s Degree from accredited program.
Required Experience: Minimum 6 – 12 months experience as a Medical Assistant preferred. FHN externship or apprenticeship counts as work experience.
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
- Certified as CMA, CCMA, RMA, NCMA or eligible for certification. Certification must be obtained within 6 months from date of MA program completion. The individual will have two (2) opportunities to successfully complete the national examination. If the medical assistant fails to pass the national examination and is unable to secure certification, they will be removed from the Medical Assistant role.
