JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Promotes patient health by supervising the nursing process. Ensures initial nursing assessment is completed within 24 hours of admission or per unit/JMH policy; reassesses routinely throughout patient’s stay in the Program. Directs, plans, and provides nursing care in accordance with patient diagnosis and needs. Ensures efficient discharge planning for patients is executed. Ensures progress notes and assessments are completed according to Program procedures. Ensures the development of individualized treatment plans for each patient. Ensures patient dignity and respects patient values. Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional and psychological support to patients, families, and friends. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality; and protects operations by keeping patient and program information confidential. Ensures patient personal needs (oral hygiene, toileting, bathing, dressing, transferring, etc.) are met.
Functions as an active member of the interdisciplinary team. Performs treatment interventions following physician orders such as medication administration and medical treatment orders. Conducts therapies in accordance with patients’ diagnosis and needs. Interprets the nursing and treatment needs of the patient to nonclinical staff assigned to the patient. Operates and participates in tele psych as needed. Participates in individual, group, and family psychotherapy and educational seminars as appropriate.
Supervises nursing personnel including RN’s, LPN’s, CNA’s and MHT’s. Provides leadership and direction in accordance with JMH guidelines and consistent with nursing and Program goal philosophies. Maintains personnel requirements including job descriptions, performance appraisals, disciplinary action, continuing education, and proficiency/competency testing for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Provides employee selection, orientation, training, and review. Creates, implements, and enforces nursing staffing plan for direct reports ensuring sufficient nursing personnel to provide for patient care needs in keeping with appropriate regulatory requirements.
Collaborates with physicians, multidisciplinary team members, and outside health and social agencies. Ensures efficient discharge plans and accurate histories are obtained at admission. Ensures the completion of all required documentation relevant to patients in a timely, efficient manner. This includes but is not limited to:
- Admission paperwork
- Assessments (mental and physical)
- Progress notes
- Interventions
- Evaluations
- Discharge paperwork
- CQI+ data
Provides for professional growth and development of nursing staff through identification of needs, development of individual training plans, participation in training programs, encouragement of formal continuing education efforts, and evaluation of same. Orients or mentors new nursing staff as needed.
Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards and measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and regulatory standards. Audits patient charts. Provides feedback to supervisor on an ongoing basis regarding concerns, improvements, changes, etc.
Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs. Plans and implements nursing groups.
Ensures operations of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, calling for repairs and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
Performs medication reconciliation.
Follows voluntary and involuntary procedures/processes.
Protects patients and employees by adhering to safety standards, infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations. Uses hygienic practices and teaches patient hygienic practices. As needed, and using approved methods, assists in safely placing patients in seclusion or restraints; observes suicide/seclusion precautions; including physical requirements for physical holds and safe transport of patients. Participates in a 24-hour call process to handle emergency situations.
Operates within ethical standards.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Current Indiana nursing license required. BLS or CPR for Healthcare providers and ALS or ACLS certifications required. At least 5 years of behavioral health nursing experience required. Crisis prevention certification required.
