Position Overview:
Full Time - 36 hours per week. Scheduling options between 5x8s, 4x10s, and 3x12s.
The Team Lead is responsible for preparation of instruments, linen set-up and all equipment necessary to perform any surgical procedure. These responsibilities include the maintenance of aseptic technique in all surgical scrub procedures. Independent judgment is exercised under the direction of a Registered Professional Nurse.
CSTs at Cayuga Medical Center are an integral part of the collaborative interdisciplinary team devoted to the delivery of comprehensive and compassionate care to the Tompkins County community. CSTs are able to practice at their full scope of practice, and have the opportunity to engage in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs and services with the goal of improving patient outcomes, and execute an optimal plan of care in a shared governance environment.

What you'll do:

The Operating Room offers the opportunity to work in a fast paced environment with an energetic and stimulating group of providers and colleagues. OR orientation is 3-6 months, depending on previous experience, guided by PeriOp 101 through AORN, and using a didactic education model, in conjunction with hands-on learning. Skill development resources include a StimLab, Virtual Reality Headset, StimMan, and access to CNOR education, along with organization-wide resources. Case variety allows for new experiences on a consistent basis. Cayuga Medical Center also houses a DaVinci Surgical System for robotic-assisted procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Maintains standards of care for the operative patient following AORN standards/recommendations.
- Maintains patient environment by stocking rooms and/or cleaning of equipment as assigned.
- Anticipates surgeon and anesthesia needs with the aid of preference cards, prior to scrubbing into cases - collects and assembles needed supplies, instrumentation and equipment for each procedure.
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to apply proper handling of supplies and equipment necessary for a surgical procedure.
- Responds appropriately to changes in patient needs during the operative procedures.
- Assist with positioning and prep of the patient as necessary
- Demonstrates the ability to handle any variation in the plan of care in a calm and efficient manner.
- Follow AORN Guidelines/Hospital policy and procedure for surgical hand scrub.
- Follow AORN Guidelines/Hospital policy and procedure for surgical counts and adherence to Surgical Time Out Procedures.
- Anticipates potential and actual safety hazards and removes equipment from patient area and places a computer generated work order on it for repair.
- Demonstrates universal precautions and infection control techniques in daily patient care activities and uses proper lifting techniques.
- Plans and organizes self to meet patient care requirements and unit needs within shift. Stays beyond as necessary
- Demonstrates flexibility and accepts change as needed.
- Is accountable for all information/in-service education/CNOR/AORN information. Teaching packets disseminated via computer, postings, staff meetings, etc.
- Participates in performance improvement activities.
- Fulfills all full-time or part-time requirements for hours worked for which hired (FT - 37.5, PT - 30.0, etc.)
- Fulfills all weekday and weekend on call requirements - this applies to FT and PT
Minimum Qualifications:
- License: NBSTSA or NCCT certification, or LPN license
- Minimum education: must be a graduate of an Accredited Surgical Technology program, and eligible for certification
- Physical: Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., Use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs), including boxes, equipment, IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time may be necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.
