POSITION:
Under direction of a Director of Perioperative Services, to be scheduled as needed, to provide direct or indirect nursing care to hospital inpatient and outpatient population in a general or specialized nursing units at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) and Santa Paula Hospital (SPH); and to perform related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Per Diem Nurse is distinguished from the Registered Nurse classification in that Per Diem Nurses are scheduled to work on an as-needed basis (intermittent) to supplement staffing needs within the perioperative services departments at VCMC and SPH.
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive pay in addition to the adjusted base rate of pay in the noted amounts for educational attainments which are not specifically required for the classification:
- Bachelor's Degree $1.25/hr
- Graduate's Degree $1.75/hr
BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination.

Per Diem Registered Nurse III are represented by the California Nurses' Association (CNA) and are eligible for overtime compensation.
NOTE: Salary placement will be determined according to the current CNA Per Diem Unit. memorandum of agreement.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this position only. There is currently one (1) Per Diem (Intermittent) vacancy.
TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
OPENING DATE: December 27, 2023
CLOSING DATE: This is a continuous recruitment and may close at any time; therefore, apply as soon as possible if you are interested in it. - Implements nursing processes, plans and participates in providing daily patient care;
- Follows prescribed doctors’ orders concerning treatments and medications;
- Performs patient assessments, including observations, physical examinations, patients’ response to procedural sedation, and procedural interventions and records and reports all pertinent information;
- Assists doctors in examination and treatment;
- Observes and notifies team for any breaks in sterility;
- Provides patient education and preprocedural, intraprocedural, and postprocedural care;
- Provides unit organization and management of department inventory and supplies;
- Assists in training of new nursing staff and delegates duties to ancillary personnel;
- Maintains the continuity of care by providing a comprehensive transfer of critical procedural details, events, changes, and anticipated patient care needs per the handoff report guidelines.
- May be required to assist with procedures outside the Interventional Radiology (IR) area; and
- Performs other related duties as required.
These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE
Per Diem Registered Nurse III – Requires at least five (5) years of experience. These employees may be appointed to work on specialized short term projects such as hospital accreditation or on other projects that require specialized administrative duties and responsibilities.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
- Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California, or Registered Nurse licensure in another state with California licensure pending.
- Successful completion of the Health Care Agency Pharmacology examination within three (3) months of employment is mandatory.
- Must possess a valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) Certificate PRIOR to the first day of employment.
- Must possess Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Must possess Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS)
- This position may be subject to a required on-call component
DESIRED:
- Obtain Certified Radiology Nurse (CRN) certification within six months of employment.
*These competency requirements are in conformance with the California Board of Registered Nurses nursing requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of: the theory, techniques, and practices of professional nursing; knowledge of medical terminology and hospital routine and equipment; medicines and narcotics.
