The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing individualized patient care based on the
nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. He/she must abide by
the regulations of the Pennsylvania State Registered Nurse Practice Act, maintain standards of
practice as delineated by professional organizations for each area of practice and adhere to St.
Luke’s Hospital policies and procedures when providing patient care. The intent of this job
description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and
shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Completes pre-admission consultations for invasive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
including assessing patient knowledge. Provides appropriate patient education and literature, obtains and documents pre-admission testing information from patient for procedure.
2. Assesses and monitors patient during procedures, documenting patient information in a clear and concise manner describing chronological sequence of events according to accepted policies and procedures.
3. Responsible for record keeping of controlled substances during procedures and follows protocol regarding storage of such substances.
4. Assist physicians with orders and physical assessment of patient and documents assessments.
5. Responds appropriately to department emergency situations, delegating as needed.
6. Provides report to receiving unit regarding pertinent patient information and post procedure orders.
7. Documents all follow-up phone calls to outpatients.
8. Organizes, coordinates and prioritizes patient care consistently utilizing available resources.
9. Functions as a professional role model and resource person providing guidance to coworkers.
10. Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs.
11. Assist in gathering, recording data for Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement programs.
12. Complies with established chain of command for work related problems.
13. Teaches and trains students in appropriate clinical aspects of nursing.
14. Provides educational information to the patient regarding their examination.
15. Accurately adheres to downtime procedures to assure appropriate information is available resulting in excellent continuity of care for patients.
16. Demonstrates competency in the knowledge of the RIS/HIS modules appropriate to their job responsibilities.
17. Accountable for quality of digital images sent to PACS. Verify correct patient is selected from worklist, ensures accuracy of Medical Record information prior to being sent to PACS.
18. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.
19. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
20. Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
21. Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.
22. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
23. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.
24. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1. Acts as a liaison between Ancillary Depts. and Nursing Units.
2. Completes adverse reaction documentation and sends form to Pharmacy.
3. Assists and complies with policies and procedures pertaining to crash carts and emergency boxes located in the department.
4. Transports or assists in transporting patients to their room following studies.
5. Completes event reports and follow-up forms as per hospital policy.
6. Knowledge regarding patient condition, history, appropriate background, potential risk for a particular patient and information pertinent to proposed examination.
7. Other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting for a total of 2 hours per day, up to 1-hour increments. Standing for a total of 6 hours per day, up to 1-hour increments. Walking up to 4 hours per day at 10-minute increments. Frequent fingering and grasping, continuous handling and frequent twisting and turning. Occasional lifting objects up to 50 pounds and rarely lifting up to 100 pounds. Occasionally carrying up to 40 pounds and rarely carrying up to 100 pounds. Occasionally pushing/pulling up to 400 pounds. Occasionally stooping/bending, crouching and kneeling. Rarely squatting, crawling, and climbing and frequently reaching above shoulder level. Touching as it relates to feeling.
Hearing as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and visual monotony.
POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:
1. Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust and temperature.
2. Continuous exposure to infection and/or contagious diseases when working with patients (risk minimized by adherence to universal precautions).
3. Potential risk for back injury due to lifting (risk minimized using body mechanics techniques according to the guidelines and in-services established by the Hospital Safety Officer).
4. Frequent exposure to ionizing radiation (risk minimized by adherence to state mandated radiation protection codes).
5. Minimal exposure to hazardous chemicals (risk minimized by adherence to Right to Know laws).
6. Frequent exposure to electrical equipment (risk minimized by adherence to electrical safety procedures).
7. Exposure to needle sticks (risk minimized by adherence to hospital safety guidelines).
8. Frequent exposure to latex products.
9. Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator.
SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE: Impervious gowns, gloves, shoe covers, mask, cap, Needleless system, Patient transfer board, lead apron, thyroid shield, lead glasses, goggles, film badges.
MOST COMPLEX DUTY: Using the nursing process to provide individualized, professional nursing care to patients. The nursing process is defined as the ongoing process of assessment, planning, implementation, coordination and evaluation of patient care.
SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO): Assigned Supervisor/Manager.
COMMUNICATIONS: Excellent written and verbal communication skills required for contacts with other departments, patients, families, the community and medical staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
(MINIMUM)
EDUCATION: Graduate of professional nursing program. Registered Nurse with current license to practice in the State of Pennsylvania or seeking Pennsylvania Licensure through reciprocity.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Customized orientation to the department. Current CPR certification required by the completion of orientation. Ability to monitor and administer IV medications. ACLS certification required by the completion of orientation. History of computerusage experience required.
