Job Title: Nursing Unit Manager
Reports To: Imaging Director
Job Summary: The Nursing Manager, using a high degree of professionalism, directs the planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care programs for patients undergoing tests and procedures in all areas of Radiology and works with inpatient and outpatient areas to assure an effective continuum of care. Other responsibilities include oversight for FTEs, development and implementation of quality control and quality improvement studies, and review and revision of policies and procedures. The Radiology Nursing Manager works with stakeholders to build and support ongoing programs to support the evolving capacity and demands for Interventional Radiology services.
The Imaging Nurse Manager maintains certifications, credentialing and hands-on familiarity with direct patient care in order that they may fully support the nursing team during times of high demand or staffing shortages (see Imaging RN job description)
Job Responsibilities:
Management of Personnel
- Interview and select candidates who have appropriate clinical skills and professional characteristics to match patient needs served in Radiology.
- Communicate on an ongoing basis with employees regarding specific performance expectations. Plan and conduct formal performance reviews that are timely, ongoing and objective and submit necessary documentation.
- Responsible for discipline of employees based on standards of practice, standards of care, nursing and hospital policies and procedures.
- Interact with staff in a consistent, fair, timely, appropriate and decisive manner in accordance with hospital, Department of Radiology and Nursing Department policies.
- Promote the growth of staff in areas such as decision making, and clinical skills by identifying strengths and weaknesses, goal setting, formal and informal learning and coaching.
- Direct and develop leadership and management skills by mentoring and role modeling.
- Delegate activities/work projects to staff and supervise their accomplishment.
Management of Resources
- Direct adjustments in Radiology nursing staff pattern to reflect changes in care requirements, patient census, and staffing resources.
- Ensure that space is used or altered to maximize safety and efficiency; negotiate with other departments.
- Develop and monitor systems to assure cost-effectiveness by participating in the selection, utilization of materials and supplies, and monitoring charges.
- Identify and resolve complex or recurring operational problems.
Clinical Practice and Leadership
- Develop and provide a patient care delivery system that encourages professional practice of staff and results in quality, cost-effective care outcomes.
- Demonstrate clinical knowledge by acting as a clinical resource to staff and consultant to other departments.
- Analyze clinical practice and identify opportunities to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
- Identify clinical indicators to measure and evaluate quality care. Assure that appropriate quality monitoring occurs and that findings are used to improve practice and reduce potential for patient complications.
- Possess knowledge of current Joint Commission standards and insuring compliance of such for all areas of responsibility.
- Incorporates appropriate assessment and intervention skills in all interactions and delivery of nursing care
- Safety and protection; assessment; intervention skills; evaluation; and equipment use/management.
- Integrates the influence of the human experience of health, illness, &/or healing; adapts care management for diverse populations and environments; advocates for needs of clients; provides care in an ethical and legal manner; refers concerns/issues to appropriate resources.
- Meets Healthcare Agency standards related to:
- Telephone etiquette, customer service, attendance, punctuality, comportment, inter/intra departmental relations, confidentiality, corporate compliance, and patient/provider rights.
Education/Outreach
- Communicate with primary care providers regarding changing services.
- Develop systems and educate office staff to ensure complete and timely access to Special Procedures/IR program services.
Planning
- Develop measurable, reasonable and market-oriented goals that reflect those of the Hospital and Nursing and Radiology Departments.
- Identify progress toward goals on an ongoing basis, with measurable outcomes by year-end.
- Participate in strategic planning for the Nursing and Radiology Departments.
- Serve on departmental, central nursing and medical staff committees.
- Determine that the current and future direction for Radiology Nursing is based on ongoing program evaluation, market analysis, physician practice and reimbursement trends and fiscal viability.
Professional Development/Effectiveness
- Identify professional strengths and areas for growth and demonstrate professional development through formal and informal learning experiences.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends and practices in nursing and health care through resources such as literature review and professional networking.
- Participate in professional organizations in area of specialization and interest.
- Demonstrate professional effectiveness as a manager and role model through efficient time management, effective organization of work, and prioritization.
Requirements
- Education: Associate's Level Education
- Preferred Bachelor's Level Education
- Preferred education in ALARA principles related to Radiation Protection, and Radiation Biology.
- Experience: Two (2) years Cardiac or Intensive Care strongly encouraged.
- Licensure: Licensed Registered Nurse
