Job Description:
JOB SUMMARY
The Registered Nurse Oncology utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive care to persons with cancer and their families. The RN is an essential member of the Oncology team who is responsible for implementing the plan of care for the patient. The individual assists patients and families by being sensitive to the need for emotional support, as well as therapeutic treatment. The RN collaborates with other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure quality care for Oncology patients. RNs in Oncology work within various roles by specialty whether this is Medical Oncology or Radiation Oncology.
Nurses in Medical Oncology administer chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy treatments while the nurses in Radiation Oncology assist to support the needs of the patients undergoing Radiation treatments. Some nurses may work within both specialties. Oncology nurses provide related education and triage; and serves as a resource referral for patients. The nurse interacts with physicians, pharmacy, Clinic personnel, to provide optimal care to the individual diagnosed with cancer and his/her family. Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) guidelines are incorporated into professional practice.
Nurses in Medical Oncology may also perform Apheresis procedures and/or Cellular Therapy product collections for patients.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.
Minimum Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

EXPERIENCE
Minimum Required: None
Preferred/Optional: A minimum of two years’ nursing experience. In-patient or outpatient oncology nurse experience. Experience recommended in acute care settings or varied clinical experiences if no oncology experience.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.
Minimum Required:
- Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or Nurse Compact License.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.
- Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within one year of hire for those performing conscious sedation (varies by location).
- Membership in the National Oncology Nursing Society or Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses APHON (if working Pediatric Oncology) within three months of hire/transfer into position.
- Medical Oncology RNs performing treatments/infusions: completion of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course within one year of hire/transfer into position.
- Medical Oncology RNs: obtain Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) within three and a half years’ of hire/transfer into position.
- Radiation Oncology RNs: completion of Radiation Therapy Certificate course within two years’ of hire/transfer into position.
- Radiation Oncology RNs: obtain Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) within three year and a half years of hire/transfer into position.
- Apheresis RNs: obtain Qualification in Apheresis (QIA) within three and a half years of hire/transfer into position.
- Additional department-specific certifications, licenses, or memberships may be required (varies by department/location).
Preferred/Optional:
If no prior oncology experience, participation in ONS Orientation Bundle or other pertinent classes as discussed with management.
