Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse Supervisor (ER & MTU), the Medical/Telemetry Unit Nurse accomplishes the Department of Nursing strategic objectives by planning and organizing the assigned functions required to operate and maintain patient care activities and services within the nursing scope. The Medical/Telemetry Unit Nurse ensures quality and compassionate direct patient care is given in assigned areas. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Complete required competencies for each unit assigned to work.
- Implement standard of care practices for the treatment of patients admitted in MTU.
- Meet and comply with the hospital policies and procedures.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by conducting research; attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; review professional publications; establish networks; participate in professional societies; confer with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
- Maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and ordinances including The Arizona Department of Health Division of Licensing Services (ADOH), Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission.
- Establish, implement, and communicate goals, objectives, policies, and procedures in accordance with nursing plan and practice.
- Collaborate to ensure proper provision of care to provide for physiological, psycho social environmental, educational and discharge planning needs of the patient are met.
- Accurately document all patient care activities, changes in patients’ condition, reassessments, and response to therapy, and pertinent communication with members of the health care team in patient’s electronic health record.
- Participate in a code blue for patients on the unit and in the Emergency Room Department (ER) and Outpatient Department (OPD), if needed.
- Accurately administer blood/blood products, medication/medical treatment, monitors and
- document patient’s condition and response to therapy in accordance with current standards of care and hospital policy.
- Delegate assigned duties to the CNAs that are within the scope of their certification for them to adhere to the treatment regimen.
- Ensure patients’ needs are met
- Provide and support activities regarding implementation or hospital policy on Patient’s Rights and Responsibilities.
- Translate diagnosis information into Navajo language or arrange for translation for patient
- Maintain a clean and comfortable environment for the patient.
- Provide educational materials and learning opportunities to the patient, family and/or significant other concerning diagnosis and recommended treatment.
- Practice proper isolation techniques and maintain a clean safe working environment.
- Perform basic neurological exam and assessments of mental status, to include level of consciousness, respiratory pattern, presence of confusion, lethargy or hallucinations and motor strength.
- Perform wound care, IV/PICC site care, medication administration, application of cardiac monitor and EKG electrodes if appropriate, and other skilled procedures for which the RN has been trained.
- Ensure patient’s nursing needs are assessed within two hours of the time of admission.
- Properly document all patient’s assessments and reassessments.
- Implement patient’s care plan.
- Implement physician’s orders.
- Ensure proper facilitation is being conducted on prescribed medical regimen.
- Follow proper medication guidelines outlined in the policy.
- Accurately administer medications/medical treatment, monitor patient’s condition and response to therapy in accordance with current standard of care.
- Ability to draw intravenous and peripheral blood.
- Ability to start an IV line.
- Assist with ambulation of patients.
- Transport patients to other hospital departments as needed.
- Obtain specimens for labs and transport them to the appropriate location.
- Perform basic laboratory procedures to include:
- Rapid Strep Test
- Accu-check
- Nasal Swab (Flu A/B, RSV, COVID19)
- Urine dipstick
- Hemoccult/stool specimen
- HCG Test
- Venipuncture
- Urea Breath Testing
- Report critical and routine lab results to the provider.
- Collaborate with medical providers and other discipline resources in planning and providing patient care services.
- Coordinate ordering of medical and CSR (Central Supply Room) supplies.
- Participate in Quality Initiatives and Performance Improvement assignments for department.

- Ensure proper documentation is documented in patients’ electronic health record.

- Provide “On-call” duties as assigned.
- Participate in CPI training, infection control, patient safety, fire safety, customer service and blood transfusion in-services and other mandatory training requirements annually.

- Knowledge of the location of all supplies, forms, crash carts.
- Knowledge of the abuse and domestic violence procedures.
- Knowledge of Blood Bank alarm response procedures.
- Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and mathematics.
- Ability to perform effective interpersonal skills function at a high level of independence.
- Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing with staff and the general public.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the Employee regularly is required to stand, walk, crouch, kneel and occasionally sit; use hands and fingers to grasp objects; reach with hands and arms; and to talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office, clinic or hospital setting with exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment and exposure to blood borne pathogens. Exposure to latex products on a routine basis. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTSMinimum Qualifications:
- Associates of Science in Nursing, BSN preferred.
- Two years of clinical experience preferred.
- Valid unrestricted nursing license from the state of Arizona or another compact licensing state.
- Valid American Heart Association certification of BLS, ACLS will be required within 45 days of hire. Proof of course enrollment will be required before start date and course fees will be reimbursed after satisfactory 90-day probation period.
- Must be able to successfully pass the Employee Health Program requirements and background investigation.
