Responsibilities: The Assistant, Education/Staff Development will work Regular Full-Time Days, 11AM - 7PM and will assist the Director of Staff Development/Infection Control and the Assistant Director of Staff Development/Infection Control with the planning, organizing, and conducting of employee education, employee health, and infection control for both Valley Health Services and Valley Residential Services.
The Assistant will assist with planning, developing, directing, evaluating and coordinating educational and on the job training programs.
Assisting with incorporating commercially produced instruction material and training aids into existing in-service programs as deemed necessary.
Provide leadership in formulating the goals and objectives of the in-services educational programs of the facility.
Secure, develop, and maintain records, reports, instructional manuals, reference materials, etc., pertinent to in-service educational programs.
Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms, reports, class attendance and subject records, etc.
Make written and oral reports or recommendations to the Director of Staff Development & Infection Control concerning in-service training programs.
Assisting with the responsibility and accountability of continuing ongoing in-service educational programs.
Assist the Director of Staff Development & Infection Control in developing and implementing in-service training programs, including mandatory staff training.
Assisting with developing, directing, and scheduling refresher training for staff including ongoing competency testing/auditing to promote optimal level of care.
Remain current in new developments by attending professional institutions, reading professional journals, and attending seminars.
Keep breast of current regulations, guidelines and professional standards and make recommendations on changes in policies and procedures to the Director of Staff Development & Infection Control.
Assist with developing and participating in the planning, conducting and scheduling of orientation programs for newly hired personnel, volunteers, student interns & consultants.
Assist nursing personnel in obtaining in-service training to keep their licenses or certifications current as required.
Participate and assist in departmental studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessary.
Serve on various committees of the facility as appointed by the Administrator.
Implement recommendations from QA as they relate to the educational needs of the facility.
Maintain a good working relationship with the medical profession and other facilities and organizations.
Promote the morale of all personnel and maintain a spirit of cooperation.
Ensure that resident’s rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, privacy, property and civil rights, including the right to wage a complaint, are well established and maintained at all times.
Attend all required in-services and follow department and facility policies including the use of personal protective equipment
Assists in development of and participate in programs designed for in-service education, on the job training and orientation classes for new department personnel. Includes maintaining appropriate record keeping requirements of when classes were conducted, subject matter, attendance, etc.
Assist with scheduling annual employee physical/assessments.
Prepare potential new employees for pre-employment physical (BP, etc); review required shot records and review concerns with NP/MD prior to new employee’s orientation.
Maintain CONFIDENTIALITY of all pertinent resident care and employee information and follow HIPAA and HIV regulations.
ORIENTATION:
The Assistant will prepare orientation packets as needed for in-services for expected new employees. Return all completed test materials to Human Resources. Conduct Orientation in the absence of the Director of Staff Development and Infection Control.
Take new employees on tour of facility; introduce Infection Control/Staff Development.
Take new employees on tour of facility; introduce to Social Services Secretary for photos and badges; show new hires how to use badges for recording on time clock.
Complete new file card for physical and shot records; place request for Hep B shots for new employee’s in the Hep B book.

EMPLOYEE HEALTH:
The Assistant will assist with maintaining all employee health (Mantoux, MMR records) and in-service attendance records and administer any required shots as needed (RN only). Obtain proof of immunity to rubella and rubeola as required by code. Maintain documentation for staff that has positive tuberculin tests. RN only: Administer annual tuberculin testing to all eligible employees, volunteers and consultants.
RN only: Administer immunizations to eligible employees who request such as * Hep B/Pneumovac /FLU vaccine to eligible employees.
RN only: Assist with Employee Immunization Clinics every month for annual physicals, Mantoux, and hepatic shots due; order TB and Hep B solutions from pharmacy as needed.
Assist with Vaccination Clinics every year for employees and file all flu orders. Assist with record keeping regarding flu vaccinations for all employees (VHS/VRS/ADC) as well as consults, students, and visitors.
Assist with maintaining records (tracking) of all employee immunization status and health information; including but not limited to (upon hire and to be reviewed yearly):
MMR
Hep B Vaccinations
Influenza Vaccination
Pneumovac Vaccination
Annual Physical and Mantoux
Send employees to the clinic for Hep B titers after three months after completion of the third shot.
Assist with keeping updated list of annual employee health assessment due date.
Assist with keeping completed record by name of all employee’s immunizations and physical dates.
File all physicals and immunizations paper work in the employee’s medical file (located in the Payroll Office)
Copy immunizations records for current or former employee’s after they have completed a Medical Records Waiver form.
INFECTION CONTROL DUTIES:
The Assistant will assist the Director of Staff Development & Infection Control with implementing, evaluating and directing our facility’s Infection Control Programs.
Assist the Director of Staff Development and Infection Control in the development and maintaining precaution procedures.
Assist in developing a practical system of reporting, detecting, evaluating, and recording of infections that originate within the facility among residents and personnel.
Assist with new employee’s orientation to the importance of infection control, personal hygiene, and their responsibility in the area of sanitation and infection control.
Assist in the establishment and implementation of in-service and continuing educational programs concerning infection control procedures.
Assist in monitoring our infection control program and ensure that department supervisors are following committee adopted policies and procedures regarding sanitation and infection control.
Assist the Director of Staff Development and Infection Control to ensure that residents with known communicable diseases defined or included within the infection control program be placed on precautions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Assist with monitoring laundry procedures for soiled linen removed from precaution areas to ensure that established policies and procedures are followed.
Assist with developing and maintaining a good working rapport with all nursing personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to assure that infection control services and activities can be properly maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
Assist in developing and maintaining infections control objectives and standards.
Assist with assuring that all personnel, residents, visitors, etc., follow established infection control policies and procedures at all times.
Assist with interpret infection control policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, family members, etc, as necessary.
Meet with staff on a regularly scheduled basis, to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas and the improvement of services.
Attend and participate in committee work relevant to infection control to communicate all pertinent information to the Infection Control Committee, Nursing staff, and others as may be necessary.
Participate and assist in studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessary.
Maintain CONFIDENTIALITY of all pertinent resident care and employee information to assure that resident rights are protected.
Assist in evaluating and implementing recommendations from the QA Coordinator.
Attend and participate in workshops, seminars, etc., as approved.
Attend and participate in your professional associations, activities and programs, etc., to assure that you keep abreast of current regulations and guidelines, as well as, professional standards.
Assist with reviewing all nurses’ notes are informative and descriptive of the infection control care provided and of the resident’s response to the care.
Assist with maintaining/monitoring documentation for residents who have positive tuberculin tests.
Maintain CPR Certification.
Attend all required in-services and follow the department and facility policies including the use of PPE.
Maintain CONFIDENTIALITY of all pertinent resident care and employee information and follow HIPAA and HIV regulations.
Qualifications: RN EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Registered Nurse: Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and possess a current licensure by the State of New York.
Previous Train the Trainer expereince preferred.
Required to work one weekend a month.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able move intermittently throughout the workday.
Must be able to speak and read the English language in an understandable manner.
Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so the requirements of the position can be fully met.
Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with the residents, family members, personnel, and support agencies.
Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
Must be able to lift, push, pull and move equipment/supplies in excess of fifty (50) pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Staff works in well-lighted/ventilated areas.
Sits, stands bends, lifts, and moves intermittently throughout the work day.
Is subject to frequent interruptions, is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
Staff is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, and family members.
Staff communicates with the medical staff, nursing staff, and other department supervisors.
Staff is willing to work beyond normal work hours, weekends, and in other positions when necessary.
Staff is required to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment for necessary job tasks.
Staff may be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions including exposure to AIDS and HEPATITIS B viruses.
