The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions - the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care, with locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.

The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future and current vacancies in this class at other locations within the DPH for the duration of the eligible list. 

Job Description

Under the immediate supervision of a licensed provider, registered nurse, or nurse manager, the Medical Assistant performs duties that assist in providing medical evaluation, treatment, and care, including the administration and evaluation of routine medical tests.

Essential Duties:

The 2430 Medical Assistant performs the following essential job functions:

Administers medical tests and treatments to patients, including but not limited to Snellen, hearing, venipuncture, immunization, electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalogram (EEG), and spirometry
Assists the provider in performing various physical examinations and procedures
Cleans and performs simple maintenance of instruments and equipment
Maintains inventory of medical forms
Maintains proper inventory (including ordering supplies) and stocking of examination supplies
Operates and uses medical testing equipment
Performs check-ins, intake, and post-examination duties
Reviews medical examination procedures with patients
Performs medical data entry and retrieval duties
Performs and documents physical and written screening of patients
Processes patient medical records (including reviewing patient medical records, identifying health care maintenance needs, or visit needs)
Provides patient and family instruction in preventive health issues
Assists patients with activities of daily living and transport

The 2430 Medical Assistant also performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - Required

EDUCATION: Possession of a recognized Medical Assistant Degree or Certificate

Substitution: Any of the following may substitute for the required education:

Completion of an EMT-P (Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic) Training Program
Completion of a U.S. Military Corpsman Training Program
Completion of an EMT Training Program AND one (1) year of verifiable prehospital or emergency department clinical work experience.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: The above minimum qualifications reflect special conditions associated with the position(s) to be filled. They may differ from the standard minimum qualifications associated with this classification.

Certain positions at various locations require a valid Certified Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate issued by the California State Department.
Some positions require lifting, moving, or carrying 30 – 50 lbs. of weight.
Some positions require the ability to assist mobility-impaired patients in and out of wheelchairs, and on and off examination tables.
Bilingual Proficiency: Some positions may require bilingual fluency in a variety of languages depending upon the department's bilingual needs. Only those eligible candidates who pass the bilingual proficiency test will be considered for bilingual positions. Applicants must indicate on the application form the language(s) they claim proficiency.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

Telemetry for arrhythmias:

Experience monitoring telemetry for arrhythmias.
Completion of an arrhythmia course and passed the ECG test.
Possession of an Electrocardiogram (ECG) Technician certification.

Selection Procedures:
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following.

Assessment Component
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in written multiple-choice exam that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of medical terminology and procedures; knowledge of medical examination and procedures; knowledge of medical testing equipment; ability to plan and organize; ability to operate a computer and navigate through basic software programs; communication/human relations ability, and ability to record keep.

Written Examination (Weight: 100%): Candidates must achieve a passing score on the written multiple-choice exam in order to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

Your assessment score will be "banked" for one year. During this period, you will not need to retake this assessment for another 2430 Medical Assistant announcement. If another announcement occurs within twelve months from the date of this examination and requires this assessment, your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. Re-testing is permitted no sooner than twelve months from the date of the assessment and only in conjunction with your eligibility for another announcement for which this assessment is utilized.

The use of “banked” scores may change if the assessment is revised significantly in the future. Candidates with “banked” scores would be required to take the revised assessment sooner if they apply to a job opportunity using the same revised assessment.

Language Proficiency Exam: For positions requiring bilingual fluency, candidates deemed qualified who meet the special language condition must pass a departmentally approved language proficiency exam prior to appointment. Only those eligible candidates who pass the bilingual proficiency test will be considered for the bilingual position. Applicants must indicate on the application form the language(s) they claim proficiency.

Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of List Scores.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
