Unit Overview

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at GW Hospital is a 48-bed mixed medical-surgical ICU, also referred to as the Medical ICU (MICU). It provides comprehensive critical care to patients with a variety of diagnoses including sepsis, respiratory failure, post-surgical complications, and multi-organ dysfunction. The unit supports a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2 and is staffed with a multidisciplinary team including intensivists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and specialists. As part of a Level I Trauma Center, the ICU is integral in managing patients from the Emergency Department, Step-Down Unit, and OR.

Position Summary

The ICU RN delivers expert nursing care to critically ill patients, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Main Tasks

Monitor and assess critically ill patients’ conditions
Administer medications, titrate drips, and manage complex medical equipment
Collaborate with intensivists and interdisciplinary teams on patient care plans
Provide education and emotional support to patients and their families
Maintain detailed and timely documentation in the EHR system
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and code response teams

Qualifications

Required:

Current RN license in the District of Columbia or eligibility
Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications
Minimum of 1 year of ICU or critical care experience

Preferred:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification
Experience in a Level I Trauma Center
