DIRECTOR OF NURSING SERVICES
Navigator Homes / Alliance HMS - Martha's Vinyard, MA is a non-profit skilled nursing facility with an exciting opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse to join our Alliance Management team as the DIRECTOR OF NURSING SERVICES at Navigator Homes. . We are looking for someone who is compassionate and can effectively communicate with residents, families, visitors, co-workers, physicians, and other employees as well as provide enthusiastic leadership to our clinical team.

Supervisory Responsibility for: Nurse Managers, Supervisors, Coordinator of Education and Infection Control, Establishing Navigator
Green House Culture and Training.
Qualifications for this Position:
- Education: Graduate of state approved school of nursing; current Massachuesetts registration as R.N., B.S.N. preferred
- Experience: Minimum of two years experience at the supervisory, management level. Prefer three to five years experience in geriatric long term care or other health care setting.
- Specialized Skills: Clinical competencies desirable. Excellent organizational ability with strong written and verbal communication skills. Comprehensive knowledge of MMQ, OBRA, PI, JCAHO. Ability to assume responsibility for nursing compliance to federal, state, and local regulations.
- Essential Personality Traits: Able to work with all levels of personnel and management with a professional and collaborative approach.
Physical and Enviornmental Demands:
- Ability to speak, read and write effectively in English
- Occasional lifting and transferring of residents/patients weighing (~150lbs.), with assistance. Occasionally pushes residents/patients in wheelchair weighing up to 250lbs.~300feet; twists, stoops, bends, kneels, squats, climb stairs, lifts and carries equipment and supplies weighing 25lbs or less; reaches above, at or below shoulder height. 100% of the day is spent indoors, 60% sitting and 40% walking or standing.
- Exposure to blood borne pathogens as indicated by the OSHA guidelines and does involve occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. The category numbers (1-3) at the end of each position function indicates risk of exposure with 1 the highest and 3 indicating no exposure.
- Is subject to exposure to infectious waste and to handling hazardous chemicals.
Essential Functions of this Position:
- As the Director of Nursing Services you are delegated the written authority from the Administrator/ Executive Director to be responsible for nursing services; administration of IV therapy; management of controlled substances; implementation of resident/ patient care policies; serve as the Resident/ Patient Care Assessment Coordinator for medical peer review.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of the nursing service philosophy and objectives.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of standards of nursing practice for each category of nursing personnel.
- Review nursing policies and procedures, at least annually, and participate in making recomended changes.
- Participates in the development and revision of written position descriptions for nursing personnel with the Human Resource Manager.
- Review the performance of and establish performance agreements with the nursing supervisors and nurse managers per facility policy.
- Coordinates nursing services with other resident/ patient services/ activities.
- Assists with the assesment and planning of care for resident/pateints identified with needs on a daily basis.
- Recommends numbers and levels of nursing personnel to be employed to the Administrator/ Executive Director. Oversees scheduling of nursing personnel to ensure sufficient staff is maintained to meet the daily nursing care needs of the residents/patients.
- Participates in evaluation of the nursing education programs to ensure regulatory and educational needs are met.
- Participates in the planning and implementation of the nursing service budget.
- Participates in the interviewing, hiring decison, counseling and termination of all nursing personnel.
- Participates with the Medical Director and the Consulting Management Team in the development and implementation of resident/pateint care policies.
- Meets regularly with the Medical Director to review medical care issues.
- Serve on, participate in, and attend various committees, meetings, teams (ie, Infection Control, Accident and Saftey, Pharmacy, PI Council, Interdisciplinary Team Department Director Meetings, PI Teams).
- Perform PI monitoring activities as established by PI Council. Direct and implement promotion of PI concepts.
- Participates in staff development programs.
- Ensures that incident reports from resident/patient, staff and visitors are accurately completed, amalyzed with appropriate action taken and reports are filed timely with administration.
- Participate in facility surveys made by authorized government regulatory agencies/ JCAHO.
- Participate in the development of the plan of correction for deficiencies noted during the survey.
- Functions in a professional and collabrative role with th eCOnsulting Management Company.
- Participates in selection of prospective residents/patients in terms of nursing services required and competency and avialability of personnel to provide the needed service.
- Salaried/ Exempt position with self directed schedule that may include evening and weekend time.
