About this unit

Family Birth Center is a 19 bed unit that provides care for pregnant women. The care on the unit ranges from the delivery and recovery of the mother with a normal, uncomplicated, term pregnancy to that of a high-risk mother, both pre-term and post-delivery. The unit includes a 6 bed natural birth center, 6 bed triage, 4 operating rooms, and a 4 bed recovery room. Antepartum is a 14 bed unit that provides care for women of all ages. The main population is women with complications of pregnancy and health related problems during pregnancy. In addition, when volume demands, Antepartum also provides care to NICU postpartum mothers and gynecology patients.

Scope of work

The RN, under the ANA scope of practice utilizes the framework of the nursing process to provide professional nursing care by incorporating patient-family centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge. The RN provides quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader according to Corewell Health policies and procedures and recognizes the impact of nursing care and patient/family partnerships on patient outcomes. The RN partners with and utilizes patient/family input and goals in planning plan of care and develops teaching strategies for patient/family; documents education and learning appropriately in health record.

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an Associate degree or from an ACEN accredited Diploma program.
BSN, MSN, DNP/PhD – if not minimum BSN prepared, new graduate/nurse with less than one (1) year experience is required to sign an educational contract upon hire to complete BSN within specified timeframe and adhere to contract stipulations. RN must enroll in an accredited BSN program within one (1) year of licensure date and complete within the next five (5) years. This is effective April 18, 2023.
MI Registered Nurse (RN) Required
AHA, ARC, or Canadian Heart and Stroke Basic Life Support (BLS), required upon hire/transfer
NRP required within 6 months of hire/transfer
EFM Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification within 1 year
Specialty Certification highly recommended within 2 years
External candidates are required to have a minimum of 2 years of L&D RN clinical experience. External candidates must successfully complete a required competency assessment provided by Nursing Education.
Internal candidates with less than 2 years of L&D RN clinical experience must be approved by their current nurse leader and the site Chief Nursing Officer. These candidates are to remain a unit-based PRN employee until they reach 2 years of nursing experience.
