Summary
Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Patient Placement Supervisor RN position is responsible for serving as a clinical resource and unit expert for staff. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and patient placement policies.
The Patient Placement Supervisor RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice.
The Supervisor RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence based practice and research findings.
This position involves interaction with physicians, nursing staff, case management, and community resources. The Supervisor Patient Placement RN is responsible for identifying process concerns, providing service recovery, and escalates issues to appropriate chain of command as needed. Active participation in team meetings, staff schedules, and education of the staff is a key role.
Responsibilities
(40%)*Assesses competency of department staff, and functions as a liaison to facility staff completing and maintaining unit competency. Act as a resource and role model for unit practice, develops and maintains collaborative relationships and channels communication with members of nursing care teams, including essential service leadership. Helps in development, delivery of process improvement strategies, and assist in promotion of teamwork and safe patient placement in times of need. This position will over facilitate continuous, efficient, and timely placement and status transfers of patients from all points of entry including ED, system and outlying hospitals, and direct admissions into any MyMichigan Health medical center. Focus on developing technical skills, clinical decision making and professional practice for staff.
(10%)* This position will promote physician to physician communication and educations to ensure seamless care for patients transferring from one facility to another. This position will be responsible to oversee admissions and transfers across the system, monitor bed availability and turnover of beds, and act as a central contact for all bed management decisions.
(10%)* In addition to supporting daily operations, the Supervisor Patient Placement RN will promote staff education through in person one on one education, shift change huddles, and assist is staff meetings to maintain department proficiency regarding current and future policies affecting Patient Placement.
(40%)* Responsible for system oversight of the utilization review case management staff to include the development, implementation, and monitoring of policies and procedures associated with activities relating to preadmission review, admission review, and concurrent utilization management functions in response to internal policies and external review guidelines of third party payers. Provides support for staff in assessing effective resource utilization. Conduct and direct responses to external utilization determinations through appeal processes and/or corrective action.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Completes all training expected of staff, continues professional development and demonstrates expertise.
Participates in Unit Practice Council, assisting with unit cohesiveness, teamwork, and positive morale. Routinely audits patient documentation for regulatory compliance as well as ensuring adherence to quality and safety related.
Demonstrates ability to delegate responsibilities, make sound judgements and accurately assess when to refer issues to manager.
Uses critical thinking in all interactions.
Ability to identify problems, collects data, and establishes facts in order to effectively resolve problems.
Acts on recommendations of audit and physicians.
Identifies needs, assists in development and implementation of programs in corporation with Department of Education for orientation, staff development, and continuing education.
Maintains process improvement programs for Patient Placement.
Assures compliance with all policies, regulations, and advanced practices pertaining to Patient Placement.
Completes schedules for RN's and patient placement assistants on all shifts to ensure adequate coverage of department.
Appropriately delegates tasks to the Patient Placement Assistant that do not require an RN.
Builds professional relationships with all facilities and resources.
Demonstrate exceptional Customer Service skills.
Describes how medical necessity and denial prevention relate.
Provides manager with input for Job Performance Reviews (JPR'S), if requested.
Sets realistic short and long range performance goals and evaluates progress.

Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures as normally required though 3 years experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting
Knowledge of nursing leadership as normally acquired through 1 year in a Medical Center or similar setting with involvement in supervision, charge nurse, project implementation, and professional development

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
