Job Description

Purpose:

Under the general direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director of Nursing for Medical-Surgical Services is responsible for the overall strategic and operational leadership of the medical-surgical nursing units. This includes planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care delivery in alignment with hospital goals and regulatory standards.

Specific Duties And Responsibilities

The Director of Nursing Lv 4 is charged with and responsible for:

Operations Management

Assumes responsibility for the daily operations of medical-surgical nursing units.
Ensures adequate staffing and skill mix to meet patient care needs, using recruitment, reassignment, and float pool management.
Oversees patient flow and bed management to optimize throughput and resource utilization.
Reviews and posts schedules in compliance with contractual agreements.

Clinical Leadership & Staff Development

Keeps abreast of current nursing technology and professional techniques, disseminating best practices to nursing staff.
Leads initiatives to enhance staff education, competency, and professional growth.
Conducts competency assessments, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions as necessary.
Ensures compliance with mandatory education, certifications, and training.

Quality, Safety & Performance Improvement

Leads quality improvement initiatives within the medical-surgical units to enhance patient outcomes and staff performance.
Monitors patient care incidents and implements corrective actions to mitigate risks.
Actively participates in accreditation, performance improvement, and regulatory compliance activities, ensuring adherence to Joint Commission (TJC), CMS, and DOH standards.
Implements evidence-based practice models to improve patient safety and care quality.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Collaborates with physicians, ancillary departments, and hospital leadership to optimize patient care and operations.
Serves as a resource for nursing leadership, offering guidance on policy development and best practices.
Participates in hospital-wide committees, contributing to policy development, operational planning, and clinical best practices.
Represents nursing in strategic hospital initiatives, ensuring alignment with institutional goals.

Budget & Resource Management

Develops and manages budgets for medical-surgical services, optimizing cost-effectiveness and financial sustainability.
Oversees supply chain management, ensuring timely procurement and cost containment strategies.
Identifies opportunities for revenue enhancement and operational efficiency improvements.

Regulatory & Compliance Oversight

Ensures nursing compliance with hospital policies, labor agreements, and regulatory requirements.
Leads survey readiness efforts for accreditation bodies such as TJC and the Department of Health.
Implements and monitors hospital-wide patient safety goals and initiatives.

Additional Responsibilities

Serves as Administrator on Duty (AOD) as needed, providing executive nursing leadership during assigned shifts.
Assumes additional duties as assigned by the Chief Nursing Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
A Master's Degree in Nursing Administration or an equivalent field, and a minimum of four years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three years of which shall have been in a hospital; or,
A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
