Job Summary
Performs non-invasive diagnostic testing which produces electrocardiographic tracings, to provide data to the physician to aid in the proper diagnosis and treatment of heart disorders. These tests include, but are not limited to, cardiac stress tests, nuclear stress tests and stress echoes.
Essential Job Functions

- Ensure operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements by following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Maintain nursing supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies, and using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
- Maintains a sufficient level of supplies in all testing areas.
- Maintains records of reports for verification and statistical purposes.
- Cleans and maintains all equipment used to provide safe and sanitary conditions.
- Obtains necessary equipment and supplies when needed.
- Performs other clerical duties as assigned including work in departments outside their home department.
Specialty Job Functions
- Conducts patient interview and identifies any contraindications to exercise or pharmacological stress testing. Prepares patient appropriately.
- Identifies patient using two forms of identification per policy.
- Accurately and efficiently completes patient history.
- Starts IV if trained to do so and appropriately documents the gauge, date, time and site of insertion.
- Explains the test and answers any questions the patient may have.
- Conducts a brief overview of relevant patient history with the physician conducting the test.
- Accurately and efficiently prepares patient per protocol.
- Properly prepares the skin for and attaches the electrodes and leads to the patient.
- Collects vitals and runs 12 leads as indicated per protocol.
- Properly conducts the exercise portion of the test and terminates the test per protocol.
- Runs 12 lead EKGs when indicated per protocol.
- Takes BP readings as indicated per protocol.
- Collects and record any other vitals as indicated per protocol.
- Performs all the technical aspects of using the stress equipment without undue risk to patient, self or others.
- Properly and sensitively informs patient before, during and after the test of what to expect and asks how they are feeling throughout the test.
- Asks the patient why they are having the test.
- Explains the test and answers any questions they may have.
- Asks the patient during the test how they are feeling.
- Records all information on above questions as indicated per protocol.
- Documents all that is indicate per protocol to document and accurately and efficiently compiles all reports for processing.
- Assures all reports are completed and include date, time and signatures.
- Compiles all necessary reports and papers for distribution and processing.
- Signed on inpatient medical record that test has been completed, report to follow.
- Works collaboratively with other techs and nurses to see that all other aspects of the tests are done completely and in a timely manner.
- Considers nuclear scanning aspects of testing and allows for the time involved.
- Considers echocardiography aspects of testing and cooperates in whatever ways are needed to facilitate.
- Administers appropriate medications including but not limited to Dobutamine and Adenosine using aeseptic techniques and according to PA RN License, DOH and JCAHO regulations.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program required.
- One (1) year of inpatient nursing experience.
- Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
- Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.
- Basic working knowledge of computers and office equipment.
- A Nursing refresher course may be required if employee hasn’t worked in an acute care setting for his / her most recent three consecutive years of professional employment
- Basic Math and Keyboard Proficiency
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
License, Certification & Clearances
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program required.
- PA Act 153 Clearance with renewal (Act 33, Act 34, Act 73 FBI Clearance).
- Current ACLS or completion within six (6) months of hire/transfer into department
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but may serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).
- Travel may be expected locally between Excela Health locations.
