General Summary
This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses who have greater than 12 months experience. Provides and coordinates independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team. Utilizes the institution’s care delivery and professional practice models as the frame of reference for practicing as a professional nurse. Participates in activities to develop own practice, and to support group practice goals at the unit level. Is accountable to patient, family and team members for care provided and to the nurse manager for totality of work performance. Is accountable to hold to the Service Standards and to the Nursing Mission, Vision and Values.
Clinical Practice:
- Competency in care of unit specific patient population; independently practices with solid knowledge and clinical skills; engaged in advancing own practice.
- Serves as a clinical resource for others.
- Applies and integrates evidence into practice
- Functions effectively in roles specific to unit, such as arrest team for ICU, triage for ED, etc.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care; independently advocating for patient/family needs
- Models practice consistent with unit operations to ensure safe, timely effective, efficient, equitable, patient centered care.
Professional Development:
- Engaged in advancing own practice.
- Responsible for maintaining competencies required for that patient care setting; focus on advancing own professional development.
- Attends unit based staff development independently.
- Demonstrates the ability to serve as a trained preceptor and coach’s new nurse and students.
- Contributes to developing/evaluating unit based orientation and other education activities.
- Contributes to nursing support personnel skills and development.
- Completes CE’s on an annual basis based on facility minimum requirements.
Service/Quality:
- Understands and contributes to unit-based outcomes associated with National Hospital Quality Measures (NDNQI), Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators, and Facility Annual Operational Plan.
- Contributes to and endorses some or all elements of research/EBP/QI.
- Provides high quality, safe, patient centered care with focus on exceeding service expectations.
- Accountable for compliance with regulatory requirements and holds others accountable; participates in tracer activities when requested.
Patient Safety:

- Demonstrates the ability to function in the charge nurse role.

- Participates in recruitment and retention activities at the unit level.
- Provides feedback in peer review as requested. Provides direct performance feedback at the direction of the nurse manager.
Qualifications
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Education & Training: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, Bachelors preferred. Currently licensed as an RN in the State of Maryland. Certification in BCLS, PALS and ACLS required for OR nurse.
Work Orientation & Experience: Orientation based on experience level and determined by unit.
Skills & Abilities: Ability to: a) convey effective verbal and written communications; b) utilize basic assessment and critical thinking skills; c) organize and manage time effectively setting appropriate priorities; d) make independent decisions consistent with current policies, procedures and nursing standards; e) successfully complete standardized dosage exam; f) adapt hours of availability to variable and changing needs of the hospital, including all shifts; g) effectively function as a member of a collaborative team; h) respond to emergency situations appropriately, and i) adhere to standards of behavior and support Culture of Excellence.

Unit Specifics:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, TASKS And RESPONSIBILITIES
- Proactively participates as a team member in support of the total surgical process.
- Organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management.
- Supervises and directs patient care in the operating/procedure room.
- Organizes nursing activities efficiently and effectively.
- Delegates activities appropriate to the abilities of available staff members.
- Considers cost containment by using supplies economically and by managing efficient turnover time.
- Assists with supplies, drugs, and equipment inventories to maintain stock level and availability.
- Addresses patient needs specific to the surgical procedure.
- Transports patients to or from the operating/procedure room, as needed, observing policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Using two patient identifiers, identifies the patient and correct procedure, according to policy and procedures, and communicates with the healthcare team.
- Reviews patient’s medical record and needs, to provide continuity of care collaboratively, with other members of the healthcare team.
- Provides comfort and reassurance to patient.
- Maintains patient’s privacy and dignity.
- Verifies planned procedure(s) with patient and discusses plan of care.
- Works collaboratively with the healthcare team to prepare the operating/procedure room according to requirements of patient, physician, and procedure, to include but not be limited to, assembling and providing properly functioning equipment, supplies, and instruments.
- Works collaboratively with the surgical/procedure team to verify sterility and/or high level of disinfection of instruments and supplies according to policy and procedure.
- Handles and logs tissue specimens correctly and accurately according to policy and procedures.
- Works collaboratively with healthcare team to ensure physician preference cards are maintained and updated as needed.
- Ensures the appropriate and safe positioning of the patient according to patient needs and planned procedure and monitors throughout procedure.
- Administers medication(s) per order of physician, documents appropriately.
- Monitors patient condition and maintains accurate documentation during procedure.
- Accurately comprehends and interprets physician orders and direction, following policy and procedure.
- Documents medical records and other forms accurately, legibly and in a timely manner, following policies and procedures.
- Works collaboratively with the healthcare team to ensure safe continuity of patient care according to policy and procedures.
- Confirms proper aseptic and sterile techniques are used according to accepted standards of practice.
- Monitors and identifies breaks in sterile technique.
- Verifies correct site, ensure all radiologic images are present, as applicable.
- Performs time out prior to start of procedure, inflation of tourniquet, or incision.
- Ensures a correct sponge, needle, sharps, and instrument count (as applicable to the procedure)
- Performs the surgical preparation.
- Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Compensation:
Pay Range: $34.50-$47.39
