Nurse Practitioner Opportunity – San Mateo, CA

We’re looking for a Nurse Practitioner to provide essential care and support to a diverse community in San Mateo. If you’re bilingual in one of BHSD’s five threshold languages—Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog, or Vietnamese—you may be eligible for an additional incentive.

What You’ll Do:

As a Nurse Practitioner in this role, you’ll provide vital medical care to individuals with substance use disorders, often with co-occurring conditions. You’ll work in a supportive, inclusive environment that values collaboration and growth. Your expertise in patient care, crisis intervention, and de-escalation will help individuals move from a place of hopelessness to one of stability and self-worth.

Salary: $150,000 annually (depending on experience and qualifications)

Schedule: Full-time

Key Responsibilities:

Interpret vitals collected by LVNs or other healthcare staff.
Review patient history, including communicable diseases, to ensure quality care.
Assess substance use history and drug test data to support safe stabilization.
Document patient progress accurately and in a timely manner.
Monitor patients for signs of mental or physical deterioration, consulting with an MD when needed.
Utilize withdrawal assessment scales (CIWA, COWS) to manage symptoms safely.
Prescribe withdrawal management medications, including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), under a doctor's supervision.
Gather treatment appropriateness and fitness information for the Medical Director.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of pharmacology and the physiological effects of alcohol and other substances.
Report medical incidents and unusual occurrences to the Program Manager, Compliance Manager, and MD.
Collaborate with LVNs, managers, MDs, clinical supervisors, and counselors as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Ensure all electronic health records and documentation comply with agency policies.
Provide guidance and mentorship to healthcare professionals on the team.
Conduct patient rounding and maintain thorough progress notes.
Support program operations and maintain a clean, safe environment.
Attend staff meetings and training sessions as required.

Qualifications:

NP License in the state of California.
Preferred: 6 months to 1 year of experience in substance use disorder, mental health, or a related field.
CPR certification (or ability to obtain within the first month of hire).
Bilingual preferred: Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog, or Vietnamese.
