The Orthopaedic surgery center of Ocala is an outpatient surgery center specializing in orthopaedic surgeries such as total joint replacement, joint arthroscopies, hand surgeries. We believe in compassionate, patient centered care where patients feel comfortable and safe. The center is home to three board certified orthopaedic surgeons who have served Ocala and their North Central Florida neighbors for more than 25 years.

Position Summary:
The Pre-Admission Testing Nurse (PAT) plays an essential role in ensuring the safe and efficient preparation of patients for surgical procedures.
The PAT Nurse assesses the patient's medical history, obtains a baseline assessment , and collaborate with healthcare teams to ensure that patients are optimally prepared for their procedures. Attention to detail, strong communication skills, and clinical expertise will contribute to the overall quality of care provided to patients.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing
One (1) year of nursing experience, preferably, in an ambulatory surgery center
RN with active license, no restrictions (license in appropriate state)
CPR certification and/or ACLS-PALS certification (as required by Center)
Strong ethical and moral character references
Basic computer skills

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, TASKS and RESPONSIBILITIES
• Uses equipment effectively following manufacturer’s instruction for use
• Uses proper techniques and procedures according to accepted standards of practice
• Assists with inventory of supplies, drugs, and equipment to maintain availability and stock levels in the pre-admission area
• Maintains order and cleanliness of Pre-Admission area
• Per Center Policy, uses two patient identifiers, identifies and validates the patient and procedure to be performed
• Provides comfort and reassurance to patient
• Maintains patient's privacy and dignity
• Reviews the surgeon's history and physical
• Reviews the surgeon's order for the upcoming surgery and ensure it matches what the patient is scheduled for
• Accurately comprehends and interprets physician orders and direction
• Reviews and verifies the anesthesia questionnaire completed by the patient or patient's representative
• Reviews and verifies the medication record completed by the patient or patient's representative
• Verify patient's allergies
• Completes the pre-admission assessment
• Utilizes the nursing process to perform safe and individualized nursing care throughout the pre-admission process
• Effectively communicates to the Anesthesia Provider any questions or concerns regarding patient's medical history or medications.
• Effectively communicates to the surgeon's office as needed
• Reviews patient's rights and responsibilities with patient and patient representative
• Provides education to the patient on the Center's policy on advance directives
• Provides education to the patient on DVT, Falls, Alternative Pain Management and Post-Operative Expectations
• Provides education to the patient on Smoking Cessation and Sleep Apnea as appropriate
• Provides education to the patient and patient's representative on Privacy Practices
• Provides education to the patient and patient's representative on anesthesia instructions to prepare for surgery
• Works collaboratively with the healthcare team to ensure continuity of patient care
• Using the nursing assessment, monitors, and reports any observed abnormalities to the anesthesia provider
• Obtains medical records and clearances from outside medical providers as needed for the anesthesia provider to review
• Documents patient-care records and other forms accurately, legibly and in a timely manner, following policies and procedures
• Assesses the physical and emotional status of the patient in preparation of the planned procedure
• Organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management
• Organizes nursing activities efficiently and effectively
• Assesses each patient for fall precautions and addresses per Center policy
• Considers cost containment by using supplies economically and by managing efficient turnover time
Attends all required education
• Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned
