POSITION SUMMARY
This individual assumes management and responsibility of Obstetrics patient selected according to Midwifery Practice Protocols.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
1. Assumes management responsibility for assessment planning implementation and evaluation of a plan of care for Obstetrical patients selected according to approved nurse Midwifery Protocols.
2. Manages normal labor and conducts delivery including assessment of Maternal and Fetal Status, Identification of deviations from normal as well as Management of Third Stage, Episiotomy and perineal repairs.
3. Manages Maternal Post-Partum course including teaching and referral.
4. Collaborates with the Obstetrics and other Health Care Team I planning and implementing care for obstetrics patients.
5. Assist in development, implementation and revision of nurse Midwifery Protocols and standards of care.
6. Evaluates individuals’ health care status of patients, formulates a management plan, and revises the plan as indicated.
7. Document in clean, complete, concise, and organized manner, demonstrating skill in the Nursing Process.
8. Participates in Performance Improvement Program on a regular and continuing basis.
9. Serves on Patient Care Services and Hospital Committees and assumes responsibility for disseminating and communicating information to staff.
10. Presents divisional and organizational continuing education programs.
11. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, Objectives Performance Improvement Program, Safety, Environment and Infection Control Standards.
12. Completes history and physical examinations and laboratory test as appropriate.
13. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, In-service meetings and workshops.
14. Performs other related duties as directed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Diploma RN and/or BSN Degree with 1-2 years special training in Midwifery Certification/Registration Licensed as a Nurse Midwife.
2. Current license to practice in the Virgin Islands.
3. Current BLS/CPR Certification.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of theories and practices of Midwifery.
2. Skill in the application of Midwifery theories and practices.
3. Knowledge to assist the young adults 12- 20 years old adolescents to develop coping behaviors for resolving conflicts.
4. Demonstrates applying principles of growth and development/teaching/learning when implementing care on the adolescence.
5. Knowledge to assist the young adult 20-40 years old with necessary adjustments relating to pregnancy and health.
6. Support changes as necessary for health.
7. Ability to assist middle adult 40-50 years to plan for anticipated changes in life to recognize the risk factors related to health and to focus on strength rather than weakness.
8. Knowledge of hospital/departmental policies and procedures, emergency protocols, Joint Commission, Center for Medicare and Medicaid services and all other local and federal regulatory standards.
9. Ability to make presentations before management, public groups, and staff.
10. Knowledge of analytical and grammatical skills necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
11. Skilled in maintaining records and preparing reports.
12. Ability to (or possess the skill level to gain ability to) define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; also apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
13. Familiarity with spreadsheet and overall computer skills.
14. Ability to work with a wide variety of other professionals and staff engaged in the delivery of health care services.
15. Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality.
16. Ability to gain the confidence and respect of the public to be served.
17. Ability to work well independently including without administrative support when required.
