Job Duties
This position performs patient care as a nurse practitioner with limited or no on-site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, and develop and implement care plans including the administration of medication and case management. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. This position is in the Southside Health District and located in our Halifax County Health Department. The Southside Health District has three offices located in Mecklenburg County (main office), Halifax County, and Brunswick County.
VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications
Typical Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs):
• Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology
• Ability to perform and interpret physical assessments, obtain medical history, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses and plan of care and provide health education to clients
• Ability to develop patient management plans; excellent clinical judgement with ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation
• Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, patients and the public; ability to participate in educational and professional programs
•Licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner as required by state code.
Additional Considerations
• Prior public health or community health with significant clinical experience in prenatal, STI, family planning, pediatrics and family practice preferred
• Current CPR/BLS certification is preferred
