Job Summary
5A is a 32 bed Adult surgical unit with an Orthopedic/Medical Surgical focus.
The Orthopedic patient population includes total joint replacement and other reconstructive surgeries involving spine, extremities and traumatically as well as non-traumatically injured patients. The Trauma patient population includes traumatically injured patients as well as occasional minor burn and general surgery patients. The Trauma service collaborates jointly with the Orthopedic service for care of the multi-injured patient. The Medical Surgical services include colorectal, urology, General Surgery.
A collaborative multidisciplinary approach is used in the provision of patient and family centered care by the patient care team which consists of physicians, nurses, physical /occupational therapists, practice management coordinator and other support staff.

Responsibilities*
To assist the Clinical Nursing Director in planning, oversight and management of the unit and the provision of patient care.
To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, service, education and research.
To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goal statements.
Reports directly to the Clinical Nurse Director. Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.
Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by Clinical Nurse Director.
Responsibilities Include
Personnel Management:
Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.
Facilitate open channels of communication with directors, peers, staff, and physicians.
Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Clinical Nurse Director.
Clinical Practice
Rotate to the off shifts as determined by unit needs as delegated by the Clinical Nurse Director.
To provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff.
Management Of Clinical Area
Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements. Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.
Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nurse Director. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks.
Collaborate with Educational Coordinator to implement competency based evaluation.
Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.
Quality Assurance And Research
Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.

Required Qualifications*
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
Required Educational Requirements; *Applicant must meet one of the following:
- Bachelor's of Science in Nursing OR Master?s degree in Nursing
- Minimum five (5) years experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the last five (5) years) RN experience in Orthopedics, Trauma, and General Surgery.
- Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), for the list, visit here

- Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability including; charge nurse, team leader, professional development framework, or other management experience.
Work Schedule
Hours/Week: 40 hours (24/7)
Shift: Evening shift ; Weekends will be based on unit need.
