All students in Frederick County Public Schools are provided with health services in the school setting. It is through this joint effort between Frederick County Public Schools and Frederick County Health Department that the School Health Services provides the link between health and education. This link is the key to the success of every student in Frederick County. POSITION DETAILS:
Non-exempt; full-time during school year / approximately 10 months per year; 35 hours per week; Monday - Friday; full benefits
This position supports the School RN in the provision a wide variety of professional health services to students, school staff and, on occasion, community members in the school setting. Travel may be required for substitutions at other schools or for special assignments. Supervision is received from the RN - School Health.
NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions. For transfers and promotions, wage rates are calculated per County policy.

- Contribute to the RN's comprehensive nursing assessment of students by performing focused assessments that address common, reoccurring health issues/needs
- Participate in the development and modification of a comprehensive plan of care
- Implement nursing care plans per the RN direction
- In conjunction with the RN, conducts health assessments to include observing children's developmental patterns, identifying deviant health findings by reporting them to the RN, and screening and evaluating deficit state mandated health screenings (i.e. vision and hearing)
- Per direction of the RN, assist with the development and implementation of a student health plan which includes interpreting student's health status to parents and school personnel, initiating referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow through, recommending and helping to implement modification of school programs to meet students' health needs, and utilizing existing health resources to provide appropriate care to students
- Administer medications and perform specific treatments as ordered by a health care provider, observe for medication and treatment side effects and take further action as indicated
- Assist in the early surveillance, detection, and reporting of contagious diseases
- Perform other related duties as required

- Successful completion of an accredited school program for Licensed Practical Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of LPN work experience within the last 5 years
- Possession of current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Maryland
- Possession of a valid automobile operator's license
- Current certification in CPR and First Aid by a recognized certification body (e.g. American Red Cross, Heart Association, National Safety Council, etc.) or ability to be so certified during the orientation process
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of program assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation
- Knowledge and understanding of the legal aspects of LPN practice setting
- Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including public speaking skills
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other health care professionals, students and parents/guardians, and the general public
PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
- Prior experience as a LPN in an educational setting
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- While working in this position, the employee is frequently stoop and drive; occasionally climb, crawl, and lift between 20-50 pounds; rarely push over 40 pounds.
- While working in this position, the employee is constantly working indoors; frequently potentially exposed to infectious diseases; occasionally walking on uneven ground and required to wear protective equipment
- This position is subject to random drug testing
- Required certifications must be maintained during employment
- Ability to provide own transportation to area schools and other commitments
- Available to respond on-call as essential personnel in the event of an emergency situation
- Available for varied working schedule as needed
