Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) is seeking a Nurse Manager. This role is full-time, 40 hours per week. SUMMARY
The Nurse Manager provides clinical leadership and supervision for Registered Nurse (RN) staff in the Bay Area RN Float Department at Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) and ensures that PAB RN staff are performing tasks within the CA RN Scope of Practice. The Nurse Manager is responsible for hiring, onboarding, initial and continued training, supervising, and providing clinical oversight of all Bay Area RN Float Department direct reports. The Nurse Manager participates in continuous process improvement of the affiliate, ensuring the delivery of health equitable, high-quality, patient focused and efficient medical services. Additionally, the Nurse Manager participates in the quality & risk management functions of the affiliate, supporting the Senior Director of Clinical Quality Assurance in key risk reduction and Clinical Quality Improvement activities for PAB services and ensuring adherence to all clinical PPFA Standards and Guidelines.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE NURSE MANAGER include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Administrative and Clinic Duties
- Monitors changes to CA BRN Scope of Practice regulations and updates PPNorCal protocols and standard operating procedures accordingly.
- Updates the PPNorCal RN Standardized Procedures with the goal of utilizing PPNorCal RNs to the maximum scope of RN practice in efforts to provide cost-effective and revenue generating health care services.
- In conjunction with the Sr. Director of Clinical Quality Assurance, Medical Director, Director of Abortion and Sedation Services, and Director of Clinical Training, oversees procedural abortion medical emergency protocol updates, training, and drills.
- In conjunction with the Lead Clinician of Training and the Medical Director, maintains and updates the RN training Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), RN Training materials and sign-off forms and RN clinical job aids.
- Participates in the implementation of new protocols, processes, and procedures under the supervision of the Director of Abortion and Sedation Services.
- Provides direct patient care a minimum of twice monthly and as PAB RN backfill when needed as part of the interdisciplinary care team in PAB services.
- Participate in quarterly PAB Leaders meetings for clinic coordinators, RNs, and APCs.
- Participate in Quality Assurance activities, including, but not limited to reviewing and leading corrective action for RN documentation of PAB services and any deviation from PPNorCal policies and procedures for PAB services and moderate sedation.

RN Hiring, On-Boarding and Training Duties
- Greater Bay Area: RN Float
- Serves as the hiring manager for RN positions.
- Northern Counties
- Participates in RN interview process for Northern counties as subject matter expert.
- Manages and coordinates RN clinical training schedules for all PPNorCal RNs (including Chico and Eureka).
- In conjunction with the Lead Clinician of Training and the Medical Director, designs and delivers of RN training curriculum which will include, but is not limited to:
- Accessing and interpreting protocols and other associated medical resources
- Billing and coding for RNs
- Laboratory services
- Clinical skills such as pre-operative care, moderate sedation administration and monitoring, and recovery care, including post sedation care.
- RN furnishing and dispensation of medications.
- RN administration of controlled substances.
- Follow-up systems, including after-hours on-call system.
- Consultation with on-call physician and other resources
- Medical record documentation in OCHIN Epic
- As available, participates in or coordinates the training of other affiliate staff members (e.g., reproductive health specialists) on injections and venipuncture.
On-Going RN Management and Supervisory Duties:
- Responsible for direct supervision of RN staff working in the Bay Area RN Float Department, including:
- RN annual reviews
- Audit and review medical record documentation.
- Identify opportunities for RN skill development and continued training opportunities.
- Identify opportunities of improved time management and productivity for RNs
- Responsible for Greater Bay Area RN staffing and scheduling, in collaboration with the Patient Access Specialist.
- Maintains and updates RN review process and documents.
- Participates in the PAB chart review component for annual reviews of RNs working in the Northern Counties.
- Assists with ongoing improvement of RN clinical skills, including but not limited to pace, comprehension of protocols, documentation, and communication.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF PPNorCal RN include the following:
- Adhere to PPNorCal Medical Standards and Guidelines while providing equitable, patient-centered care.
- Work as an integral member of the outpatient clinical team utilizing detailed communication to ensure clinic and department flow is optimal.
- Maintain excellent organizational skills, a sense of responsibility and a high level of motivation.
- Document accurately and thoroughly in electronic health records.
- Maintain professional manner and patient confidentiality.
- Dispense self-administered hormonal contraceptives and administer injections of hormonal contraceptives approved by the Federal Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in strict adherence to PPNorCal RN standardized procedures, PPNorCal MS&Gs, and US Medical Eligibility Criteria.
- Refill medications per order of an Advanced Practice Clinician or physician.
- Educate patients on sexually transmitted illnesses and reproductive/urinary tract infections signs, symptoms, etiology, and treatment.
- Educate patients on the female reproductive cycle and all contraceptive method options.
- Consult with Advanced Practice Clinicians and the on-call physician appropriately.
- Manage medical emergencies.
ESSENCIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF RN IN PROCEDURAL ABORTION CLINIC
- Review medical history, drug allergies, current medications, and labs of patients to address any special considerations and ensure no contraindications to surgical abortion procedures.
- Consult with abortion providers regarding special considerations or contraindications to procedural abortion procedure as needed.
- Perform transvaginal and/or abdominal ultrasounds if appropriately trained and privileged.
- Perform in-house labs such as hemoglobin, Rh factor, rapid HIV tests and pregnancy tests.
- Complete sedation screening on all patients who elect moderate sedation; screening includes but is not limited to review of vital signs, BMI, oxygen saturation, ASA classification, risk of obstructive sleep apnea, physical exam of head and neck, and auscultation of heart and lungs.
- Initiate peripheral intravenous lines and withdraw blood as needed.
- Elicit and answer questions regarding the procedural abortion procedure, risks, and aftercare.
- Elicit and answer questions regarding return of menstruation and birth control use/side effects.
- Inform patients of next steps and expectations in their procedural abortion appointment.
- Review and sign informed consent forms for procedural abortion with patients before administering cervical preparation medication.
- Assist the abortion provider throughout the procedural abortion including room set-up, rooming of patient, monitoring of patient vital signs, comforting the patient, and responding to emergencies.
- Administer medications, including intravenous moderate sedation, per Advanced Practice Clinician or physician order.
- Monitor patient during moderate sedation, include the patient's vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation), level of consciousness, airway patency, response to verbal commands, and any signs of complications, all documented at regular intervals alongside any interventions taken, ensuring clear communication with the administering provider regarding any changes in patient status.
- Receive patients in the recovery room and assist in transferring patients from the procedure room to the recovery room as needed.
- Create a warm, comforting environment in the recovery room.
- Supervise patients in the recovery room including but not limited to taking vital signs, assessing pain level, evaluating bleeding, educating, and using clinical judgement to escalate concerns to the abortion provider.
- Provide education to patients regarding all medications to be administered, including their desired effects, side effects and risks.
- Discharge patients from the health center per abortion provider order.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF RN IN FAMILY PLANNING SERVICES
- Complete hormonal contraceptive and emergency contraceptive visits for patients including but not limited to review of medical history, vital signs, BMI, family history, medications, and allergies; dispense self-administered hormonal contraceptives.
- Complete pregnancy tests and counsel patients in pregnancy options.
- Gather sexual health histories and complete STI screenings for patients with no symptoms.
- Collect blood, urine, pharyngeal and rectal samples for testing and order labs as instructed by an Advanced Practice Clinician or physician.
- Provide education to patients regarding all medications to be administered, including their desired effects, side effects and risks.
- Administer medications for the treatment of diseases, vaccines, and tuberculin skin tests per the order of an Advanced Practice Clinician or physician.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position supervises the affiliate registered nurses in the Greater Bay Area and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Active California Registered Nurse License required. Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or equivalent from four-year College or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
COMPUTER SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge/experience with EHR & EPM systems. Knowledge of spreadsheet software and word processing software preferred.

Pay Range: Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) supports California’s new law (SB 1162) enhancing pay transparency. This new law requires employers with 15 or more employees to include a pay range in job postings. The pay range reflects the compensation that a new employee can expect to receive if offered employment. Employees with more experience, education, and other qualifying factors may be compensated at a higher rate of pay. The pay range for this position is: $106,100 - $152,700 annualized salary.
