Charge Nurse Assists with the leadership of the department/unit by providing shift oversight and coordination of unit operations in collaboration with the Department Director and/or Unit Supervisor. Provides/assists with patient care, either directly or indirectly. Demonstrates critical thinking/clinical reasoning to ensure the delivery of safe, quality, timely, compassionate, and cost-effective care to the patient populations served by the department/unit. Effectively communicates and collaborates both intra- and interdepartmentally with staff, directors, physicians, administration and other healthcare team members. Education and Work Experience • Graduate of an accredited program for nursing education, Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred. • Current licensure to practice professional Nursing in the State of Ohio. • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR (BLS) certification required. • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required. • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required for Obstetrics (OB). • Specialty certification relevant to the department/unit preferred. • Minimum of 2-year clinical experience relevant to the unit/department preferred. Equipment/Tools/Software • Basic computer literacy (keyboarding; order/data entry and retrieval; word processing) • Knowledge of and skill in using all instrumentation/ equipment for patient care utilized in the unit/department including but not limited to IV pumps, PCA pumps, and monitors or defibrillators. Primary Job Responsibilities Patient Care • Serves as a resource for current standards of nursing care. • Integrates best practices and demonstrates competence in the delivery of patient care. • Serves/acts as a resource to both staff/team members and patients for clinical and ethical issues. • Participates in patient care delivery either directly and indirectly. • Uses professional knowledge to develop and revise nursing plans of care for patients according to department/unit guidelines and criteria. • Provides assistance for clinical decisions until Department Director and/or Unit Supervisor are available. Management/Leadership • Supports the mission, vision, and values of the organization. • Complies with all hospital, Nursing Division, and unit policies and procedures; monitors/addresses staff compliance with same. • Assumes responsibility for shift clinical operations of the department/unit, meeting appropriate standards of care and efficient operations. • Facilitates and coordinates daily assignments, through direction and delegation, and based on staff competencies and goals for development. • Assists with and holds self and staff accountable for the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of safe, competent, quality, timely, compassionate, and cost-effective direct and indirect care delivered to the unit’s patient populations. • Coordinates timely admissions, transfers, and discharges to and from the department/unit, balancing leadership and staff roles to ensure excellent continuity of care and safety while achieving leadership objectives. • Assesses current and upcoming shifts for unplanned and/or expected staffing needs and assists the Department Director and/or Unit Supervisor to provide appropriate staffing levels by adjusting staffing to meet high and low census demands; working variable hours/shifts, taking call, and/or coordinating coverage with other units and personnel; and/or effectively using/addressing staff “down time”. • Assists with creating and fostering/supporting an environment of trust, respect, and teamwork. • Serves as a liaison between patients, staff, physicians, and hospital leadership. • Assists with ordering needed supplies and facilitating availability as needed for patient care. • Monitors and addresses availability, functionality, and safety of patient care equipment. • Proactively manages and supports change. • Demonstrates loyalty and commitment throughout the organization. Education • Assists with the identification of education, competency, and professional development learning needs of department/unit staff. • Assists with assessing and addressing staff competency deficiencies. Communication and Relationships • Collaborates, communicates, and establishes/maintains effective relationships with staff, physicians, other healthcare providers and departments, and the community to coordinate the medical and nursing plans of care and facilitate patient flow and optimize throughput. • Uses tact and diplomacy during interactions. • Accepts responsibility for decisions. • Assists the Department Director and/or Unit Supervisor in the dissemination of information to the appropriate staff. • Facilitates critical thinking, decision-making and problem-resolution among staff. • Assists with investigation, problem-solving, and/or consulting with available resources as appropriate when confronted with clinical concerns or potential problems. • Supports the Department Director, Unit Supervisor and/or Administration in all interactions by maintaining open communication; formulating, and providing recommendations about all concerns or problems; responding to/assisting with service recovery issues and resolution of conflicts/concerns; and following the chain of command and providing information in a timely manner. • Supports and communicates a shared vision. Knowledge of Healthcare Environment • Assists with the review/revision, development, and implementation of policies and procedures and protocols. • Assists with the collection, analysis, and communication of data for key metrics for department/unit service excellence, quality, and process improvement initiatives. • Assists with the identification of and development and monitoring of service excellence, quality, and process improvement initiatives.
