ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participates as a member of the health care team, responds to emergencies in an appropriate manner by obtaining equipment and caring for other patients during the emergency process.
- Participates in quality improvement.
- Provides basic care to assigned patients under the direction of a registered nurse in accordance with established unit policy and scope of practice.
- Obtains and records patient information in the patient’s medical record.
- Assists health care providers in examination of patients by explaining procedure, positioning, draping, assembling instruments and supplies, and in sterile procedures such as suturing and lumbar punctures.
- Assists in screening and discharging patients.
- Assists in post-mortem care, transporting patients to various hospital departments or other facilities.
- Shares in the responsibility for reporting changes in patient status by observing the patient’s condition and reactions and by keeping the nurse informed of condition changes.
- Shares in the responsibility of maintenance of clinical records. Adheres to confidentiality policies, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and the Privacy Act. Responsible for accurate input into Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
- Assists with collection and proper care of specimens. Instructs patients in proper collection of urine samples.
- Prepares samples for analysis e.g. labels specimen tubes. Routes requisition forms to consultative services, dietary, laboratory and x-ray as needed.
- Performs the following procedures, after approved hospital specific training and completion of required competencies; venipuncture, waived testing (i.e. glucometer testing, HgbA1c, U/A dip, Urine HCG, etc.), laboratory requirements, maintenance of a sterile urinary drainage system, and bacteriologic specimens (i.e. sputum and
topical cultures).
- Sets up for oxygen administration devices/equipment; performs less complex dressings and treatments without assistance; and skin care measures. Transcribes physician’s orders correctly under the supervision of a professional nurse.
- Utilizes electronic data systems EHR, Resource Patient Management System (RPMS), etc.) for purposes of scheduling appointments, communicating with other departments and services, facilitating specialty consultations, and enhancing communication related to patient care.
- Completes unit specific training and competency, testing operates specialty monitors and equipment. Obtains CG’s and assists with cardiac monitoring.
- Assists in the arrangement of clinic appointments and discharge/transportation per nursing policy; answers phone and provides routine information per unit procedure.
- Assists the Nursing staff in orientation of new personnel.
- Performs general housekeeping duties including cleaning, arranging, restocking supply cabinets, cleaning and sorting supplies, instruments, equipment, calling attention to deficiencies in supplies and equipment, cleaning utility room and bagging soiled linen, cleaning unit refrigerators and nursing areas, and maintains a clean and safe patient environment.
- Completes all yearly Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) required training by the indicated due dates.
- Assists, promotes and supports compliance with established CMS standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MANDATORY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience:
One (1) year of direct work experience as a Nursing Assistant in hospital, clinic or medical office
setting.
Education:
Completion of a Nursing Assistant Training Program OR Valid and unrestricted credential as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Registered Nursing Assistant, or Licensed Nursing Assistant.
Certificate:
Valid American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
