Q&A

IntelyCare: What will your Intely@Sea course cover?

Andrea: “My course is titled, ‘Nutrition and Food Access.’ Nutrition is one of the most important factors to prevent illness. When illness or injury occurs, nutrition is essential to the recovery process of our patients. As nurses, knowing basic nutrition principles can benefit our patients and their journey to wellness. Knowing about food systems and understanding how our patients access their food is as important as the food they consume. My lecture will review basic nutrition principles to help guide patients in their diets and will also review food systems to have a holistic understanding of where our food comes from, accessibility, affordability, and how all of this can determine the health of our patients.”

IntelyCare: What does Nursing Professionals Week mean to you?

Andrea: “Nursing Professionals Week is a time to reflect on how far we have come as a profession and where we are going. It is a time to imagine the future and celebrate all nurses around the world.”

IntelyCare: What does education mean to you?

Andrea: “Education means sharing and receiving knowledge. It comes in many forms, it is non- hierarchical, and it should be reciprocal. Education can be formal or informal and we continue to give and receive this knowledge throughout our lives.”

IntelyCare: What do you think everyone should understand about what it means to be a nurse?

Andrea: “I see nurses as guides in the most intimate moments of life. Nurses are guiding humans in their transitions: from birth, prevention from illness, through wellness, and finally, in death.”

IntelyCare: What do you think every nurse should understand about the importance of self-care?

Andrea: “Self-care is the most important nursing skill. Without it, we cannot be sustainable.”
