Alaska State Board of Nursing License Renewal: 3 Steps
Majestic mountains meet vast wilderness in Alaska, where the spirit of adventure runs deep. Even the state’s name signifies majesty — it comes from the Aleut word Alyeska, or “great land.” Alaska is a draw for outdoor enthusiasts, travelers, and folks who don’t mind two months of darkness every year. And with 19 national parks, there are plenty of wild areas to get lost (but hopefully not too lost) in the last frontier.
Alaska’s population of more than 700,000 is mostly concentrated in Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks. Nurses are essential in this state, where their work keeps Alaskans and travelers healthy. If you’re nearing your Alaska State Board of Nursing license renewal, you’ll need to stay on top of the requirements to continue working. We’ve compiled a list of nursing facts in the state, as well as the three-step process to renew your Alaska nursing license.

Alaska State Board of Nursing License Renewal: 3 Steps
Follow the steps below to renew your Alaska nursing license. If you have an out-of-state license, you’ll need to fill out the license by endorsement forms and pay the fees. You’ll get a temporary license, which you can practice under for six months, after which you should have received your Alaska nursing license.
Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline
RNs, LPNs, and APRNs renew their licenses every two years through the Alaska Board of Nursing, and CNAs renew their registry status every two years. See the renewal deadline that corresponds with your license below:
- CNAs: March 31 of even-numbered years
- RNs and APRNs: November 30 of even-numbered years
- LPNs: September 30 of even-numbered years
You’ll be able to renew at least two months before your license expires, and you should get a renewal notice in the mail. In Alaska, there is no grace period for license renewals, so the Board recommends renewing as early as possible within your renewal window.
Step 2: Complete Your Renewal Requirements
LPNs, RNs, and APRNs must complete the following requirements to be eligible for renewal in the state of Alaska:
- 30 contact hours of continuing competency, as certified by the ANCC, ANA, AMA, or advanced practice certifying body
- 30 hours of uncompensated professional activities
- At least 320 hours of employment under your current license
Alaska issues random audits for continuing competency. If you’re audited, you’ll need to submit proof of your competency completion within 30 days.
If you’re a CNA renewing your registry status in Alaska, your renewal requirements will depend on when your registry status was originally issued. See the renewal requirements below:
- 24 continuing competency hours
- 160 work hours as a CNA
If you’re a CNA, RN, LPN, or APRN looking for ways to complete your continuing education, check out the courses and classes offered by IntelyEdu. We’re ANCC-certified so you can apply our contact hours to your Alaska State Board of Nursing license renewal.
Step 3: Renew Your Alaska Nursing License Online
Once you receive a renewal notice from the board, you can begin your license renewal online. Log in or create a MyAlaska account, and go to the MY LICENSE homepage. Select the “Renew License” button, and complete the forms for your renewal. You’ll need to pay a fee depending on your license:
- LPNs and RNs: $215
- APRN: $100
- CNA: $100
Once you’ve completed the renewal process, you’ll no longer get a hard copy in the mail. Instead, once your renewal is processed you’ll be able to find it at your MY LICENSE account.
