Intely@Sea Course Overview – Nutrition and Food Access

Intely@Sea is a five-day cruise out of Miami, Florida to the Bahamas, taking place May 9 – 13, 2022 in honor of Nursing Professionals Week! We are so excited to be a part of this celebration. It is going to be a trip to remember!

As part of the educational opportunities provided on board Intely@Sea, Andrea Jaramillo, clinical research nurse, nurse consultant, hospice nurse, certified forest therapy guide, and nurse farmer, will teach a CE course on nutrition and food access to apply to the long-term care setting.

Why is Nutrition Important in Long-Term Care?

Nutrition is one of the most important factors in patient health and quality-of-life. Poor implementation of nutrition can lead to further complications in patient health and recovery and ultimately hinders the delivery of quality care. With knowledge of nutrition, food systems, and the background of patient’s relationship with foods, nursing professionals can accurately and confidently administer patient-specific, tailored nutrition to residents, improving overall health and quality of care.

Course Objectives

This course will show how nutrition is one of the most important factors to prevent illness and improve overall health. When illness or injury occurs, nutrition is essential to the recovery process of patients. For nurses, knowing basic nutrition principles can help them improve patients’ journey to wellness. Knowing about food systems and understanding how patients access their food is as important as the food they consume.

The course will include a lecture that will review basic nutrition principles to help nursing professionals guide patients in their diets using knowledge of food systems. As a result of completing this course, nursing professionals will gain a holistic understanding of where our food comes from, accessibility, affordability, and how all of this can determine the health of your patients.
