RI Nursing License Renewal Process: 3 Steps
Follow the steps below to renew your nursing license in Rhode Island. Out-of-state nurses can apply for licensure by endorsement or examination.
Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline
Providing the requested information on time will make or break your license renewal, so it’s important to know your deadline. All LPN, RN, and APRN licenses are due on March 1, two years after the date they were issued and follow a 24-month renewal cycle thereafter.
CNAs must also renew their certifications every two years. Though CNA credentials in RI expire on June 30, you must submit your application and fees by June 15 to account for processing time.
Steps 2: Complete Your Continuing Education Requirements
It’s common for states to require healthcare workers to fulfill continuing education requirements to ensure they remain up to date on clinical knowledge and industry changes. LPNs, RNs, and APRNs must complete 10 board-approved continuing education hours to renew their licenses. One of those hours must be dedicated to Alzhiemers disease.
You must sign and submit a statement proving you’ve fulfilled your requirement. Nurses may be granted a six month extension if you’ve endured hardship that distracted you from fulfilling your requirement.
To renew, CNAs must complete 12 hours of in-service training each year at their place of employment, or successfully complete a training program and pass the credentialing exam within the past 24 months. In addition, your employer must verify that you’ve worked at least eight hours during the previous certification period.
Are you unsure of where to complete your continuing education requirement? IntelyEdu is accredited by the American Nurses Association, and has plenty of courses on a variety of subjects.
Step 3: File Your RI Nurse License Renewal Online
You can renew online on the RI Department of Health Online Services page. If the board doesn’t need additional information, it should take approximately five days for your application to be processed. You can check the status of your license on the RI Department of Health’s website. You’ll receive a card in the mail within four to eight weeks.
The renewal fees are outlined below:
- RN: $135
- LPN: $45
- APRN: $145
- CNA: $35.
