Kansas Nursing License Renewal Requirements

For nurses who don’t live in Kansas, you can obtain your license by endorsement. If you are a nurse already working in Kansas, the steps below will show you what you need to do.

Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline

After passing the NCLEX, your initial license lasts for 30 months in Kansas. After that, you must renew it every two years to remain active. You must wait until you’re within 90 days of the expiration date to renew your license. Your expiration date is the last day of the month you were born, and occurs during odd- or even-numbered years, depending on whether your birth year is even or odd.

Kansas does not allow a grace period for late renewals. If the application is even a day late, the applicant must reinstate their license. In this case, you must fill out a reinstatement application and send it to the Kansas BON. Both RNs and LPNs must pay a $150 fee to reinstate a license.

Step 2: Satisfy Continuing Education Requirements

RNs and LPNs must complete 30 hours of board-approved continuing education prior to submitting your application for renewal. First-time licensees are exempt from this requirement. Instead of continuing education, CNAs must work for at least one paid and documented eight-hour day over the past 24 months to renew certification.

If you’re an RN or LPN who didn’t complete this requirement, you can apply for a temporary permit. You’re able to work with this permit while you complete the remainder of your continuing education.

On top of the continuing education courses displayed on the Kansas Board of Nursing website, you can browse courses from IntelyEdu, which is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Step 3: Renew Your Kansas Nursing License Online

The renewal application fee is $85 biennially. When you’re ready, you can log in to the Kansas Nursing License Portal to start your online application.

Once your license is renewed, you’re good to go. You’ll be eligible to work as an RN, LPN, or CNA in Kansas. You can also work in various parts of the state, including Wichita, Overland Park, Kansas City, and more.
