Texas BON License Renewal Process
If you are an APRN, RN, or LVN in Texas, follow the steps below. If you’re not in state, there’s a different process to obtain a nursing license by endorsement.
Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline
To begin the Texas Board of Nursing license renewal process, you need to know when your current license expires. Most Texas nursing licenses are valid for two years and expire on the last day of your birth month. If you were born in an odd-numbered year, you must renew by that date in every odd-numbered year. If you were born in an even-numbered year, you must renew by that date in every even-numbered year.
Still not sure when you need to renew your Texas nursing license? You can look up your status on the Texas license verification portal.
Step 2: Satisfy Continuing Education Requirements
As a nursing professional in Texas, you must satisfy continuing education requirements within each licensing period to be legally allowed to practice. After an initial renewal, nurses must have either:
- completed 20 contact hours in the nurse’s area of practice
- achieved, maintained, or renewed an approved national nursing certification in the nurse’s area of practice
APRNs have a few additional requirements in order to renew their licenses. CNAs in Texas must complete 24 hours of in-service education every two years. Medication aides in Texas must complete a seven-hour approved continuing education program every year.

Step 3: File Your Texas Board of Nursing License Renewal Online
Your eligibility for renewal begins 60 days before your license expires. To get started, visit the Texas Board of Nursing portal. (Note that tablets and phones aren’t compatible with the portal.) If you need to create an account, follow the prompts. If you already have an account, sign in.
Once you’re logged in, you will see your license information and whether or not it is up for renewal. If you’re within the 60-day window, click the renewal link and answer the questions, clicking “next” to move through each page of the process. Eventually, you’ll reach the payment page. The fee structure is as follows:
- RN: $68
- LVN: $45
- APRN: $54
- APRN/RN: $129
After your payment is received, the BON will send you an email confirmation of receipt. You can access and print your license by using the verification portal.
